Ozil last played in a football match on February 2 2023. At that time he was substituted in the first half when Basaksehir lost 1-0 against Kayserispor in the Turkish Super League.
This match was Ozil's fourth time playing for Basaksehir after being brought in from Fenerbahce in the summer transfer window. The former Real Madrid and Arsenal midfielder's decision to hang up his boots from football could not be separated from the injury that befell him recently.
"In recent weeks and months, after also suffering several injuries, it has become increasingly clear that it is time to leave the big stage of football," Ozil wrote in his statement.

Since coming to Turkey and joining Fenerbahce in January 2021, Ozil has had fitness problems.
This made Fenerbahce release the 2014 World Cup winner with Germany at the end of the 2021/2022 season.
In his written statement, Ozil also expressed his gratitude to all parties who have helped his career as a professional footballer.
The former Real Madrid and Arsenal player also gave a touching message to his fans. He shared his gratitude for his career in football for approximately 17 years.
“I have had the privilege of being a professional football player for almost 17 years now and I feel very grateful for the opportunity,” said Ozil.

Ozil also talked about his condition, suffering from several injuries in recent times. So he had to decide to leave his professional football career.
"But in recent weeks and months, after suffering several injuries, it has become increasingly clear that it is time to leave the big stage of football," he said.
According to Ozil, this decision was made with careful consideration. He also expressed his thanks to the previous clubs he had joined. As well as thanking the coaches and teammates.
“It has been an incredible journey filled with unforgettable moments and emotions. "I want to thank my clubs - Schalke 04, Werder Bremen, Real Madrid, Arsenal FC, Fenerbahce, Basaksehir, and the coaches who supported me, plus my teammates who have become friends," he said.
