After Twitch, Amazon And Google, Discord Also Announced That It Will Fire Mmany Of Its Employees
The wave of layoffs in technology giants continues unabated. Now Discord has announced that it will fire 17% of its total staff.
The wave of layoffs in the technology sector, which started at the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023, has started again in recent days. Many technology giants, from Unity to Twitch, from Amazon to Google, decided to lay off their employees.
Now such news has come from another company. Discord, the messaging and voice chat platform that is especially popular among gamers, announced that it will reduce its workforce.
According to the statement made by the company, the layoff move will affect 17% of the total employee. This corresponds to around 170 employees. CEO Jason Citron announced the layoffs in a message to staff. In his statement, Citron stated that they made such a move "to sharpen our focus and bring agility to our organizations." It is known that Discord is not in a bad financial situation, although it is still not a fully profitable company. That's why it's surprising that he made such a move.
However, according to the CEO, the layoff is less about the financial situation and more about the amount of people hired recently. In the message sent, it was stated that Discord has increased its number of employees in the last few years and focused on more projects, therefore productivity has decreased. “Hiring too many people” is a frequently used excuse by managers in the industry when implementing layoffs lately.
This isn't the first layoff Discord has made recently. The company parted ways with 4% of its employees in August.
