Introduction

Taraba State, located in the northeastern region of Nigeria, was created on August 27, 1991, by General Ibrahim Babangida. Named after the Taraba River, the state has experienced significant growth over the past three decades, though it continues to face challenges. This is a reflection on the achievements of Taraba State under various administrations and highlights of areas needing improvement for sustainable development.

Achievements Over the Years

Since its creation, Taraba State has been governed by a succession of military and civilian leaders, each contributing to its development in various ways.

Military Administrations (1991-1999)

During the early years, the military administrators focused on laying the foundation for the state's governance and infrastructure. Roads were constructed, and efforts were made to improve healthcare and education. These efforts, though basic, provided the groundwork for future development.

Jolly Nyame's Administration (1999-2007)

Jolly Nyame, the first civilian governor of Taraba State, is credited with significant infrastructural development. His administration focused on improving road networks, building schools, and enhancing healthcare facilities. The establishment of the Taraba State University in 2008 (though inaugurated during the administration of Governor Danbaba Suntai) was one of the significant achievements that began during Nyame’s tenure. However, his administration was also marred by allegations of corruption, which later led to his conviction in 2018.

Danbaba Suntai's Administration (2007-2015)

Governor Danbaba Suntai’s administration continued the infrastructural development initiated by his predecessor. His tenure saw the expansion of the Taraba State University, improvements in the agricultural sector, and the establishment of the Jalingo Airport. Suntai also initiated several health programs to improve the well being of the people. Unfortunately, his administration was cut short by a tragic plane crash in 2012, which led to a prolonged period of political instability.

Darius Ishaku’s Administration (2015-2023)

Darius Ishaku focused on peace building, especially given the state’s history of ethnic and religious conflicts. His administration invested in improving education, healthcare, and agriculture. The "Rescue Mission" agenda, under which several projects were undertaken, aimed to transform the state’s economy. Ishaku also worked on enhancing security, although challenges remain, particularly with regards to farmer-herder conflicts.

Agbu Kefas' Administration (2023-Present)

Agbu Kefas, the current governor, has prioritized youth empowerment and education. His administration has launched initiatives aimed at improving technical and vocational education to equip the youth with skills for self-employment. Kefas has also focused on enhancing the state’s security and continuing the infrastructural development of his predecessors, particularly in the areas of road construction and healthcare delivery. His efforts to promote agricultural productivity and attract investment into the state are also noteworthy.

Areas for Improvement and Development

Despite the progress made over the years, Taraba State still faces several challenges that require urgent attention.

Infrastructural Development

While there have been improvements, many rural areas in Taraba still lack basic infrastructure. The road network, particularly in the hinterlands, needs significant upgrades. Electricity and water supply are also inconsistent, limiting economic activities and affecting the quality of life.

Economic Diversification

Taraba State is rich in natural resources, including agriculture, mining, and tourism potential. However, these sectors remain underdeveloped. There is a need for policies that will attract investment into these sectors to create jobs and diversify the state's economy.

Healthcare and Education

Healthcare services in the state are inadequate, with many rural areas lacking access to quality medical facilities. Similarly, while there have been improvements in the education sector, there is a need for more schools, better training for teachers, and improved learning conditions.

Security

Security remains a major concern, particularly in relation to farmer-herder conflicts, Kidnapping and communal clashes. The state needs to strengthen its security apparatus and invest in conflict resolution mechanisms to ensure lasting peace.

Conclusion

As Taraba State marks its 33rd anniversary, it is clear that the state has made significant strides in governance, infrastructure, and social services. However, to fully realize its potential, the state must address its infrastructural deficits, diversify its economy, improve healthcare and education, and enhance security. By focusing on these areas, Taraba State can achieve sustainable development and improve the quality of life for its residents.
