Tetris, one of the most popular and enduring video games of all time, originated in the Soviet Union during the 1980s. It was created by Alexey Pajitnov, a computer scientist at the Moscow Academy of Sciences.

Pajitnov developed the concept for Tetris in 1984 while working on a computer that ran the Electronika 60, a Soviet-made mainframe. Inspired by his love for puzzles and board games, Pajitnov wanted to design a simple yet addictive game that would challenge players' spatial awareness and problem-solving skills.

The gameplay of Tetris revolves around manipulating falling blocks called tetrominoes, composed of four connected squares, to create horizontal lines without gaps. When a line is completed, it disappears, and the player earns points. The game continues with increasing difficulty as the tetrominoes fall faster.

Pajitnov collaborated with Dmitry Pavlovsky and Vadim Gerasimov to bring Tetris to life. They used Pascal programming language and developed the game on an IBM PC. Due to hardware limitations, the initial version of Tetris lacked color graphics, but its addictive gameplay quickly captured the attention of players.

In 1986, Tetris spread beyond the Soviet Union when it was showcased at the Budapest Fair in Hungary. A British software company, Andromeda, noticed the game and obtained the rights to publish it on various home computer systems. The game's popularity grew rapidly, and it soon found its way to different platforms, including the Nintendo Game Boy, which played a significant role in popularizing Tetris worldwide.

The legal rights to Tetris became a complex issue due to the game's international success. Multiple companies claimed ownership of the rights, leading to a series of legal battles. Eventually, the rights were acquired by the company known as The Tetris Company, which was co-founded by Pajitnov in 1996. The Tetris Company continues to oversee licensing and development of new iterations of the game.

Tetris remains an iconic and beloved game, with adaptations and variations available on numerous platforms, from consoles to mobile devices. Its addictive gameplay and simple yet challenging mechanics have made it a timeless classic, enjoyed by players of all ages across the globe.
