The Weekly Telegram: New EW, The Masterok System & Drones With Drones
Some fresh updates from the front via Ukrainian Language telegram.
Some of the best places to find relevant open-source intelligence that focuses on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict can be by using sources that come from social media platforms. And, while there’s plenty to choose from, there’s lots of information that can be found by taking the time to translate posts that aren’t in English. Here’s the latest in interesting news that’s been harvested from Telegram over the past week.
The Masterok
First heard of via intercepted radio transmissions, the Masterok is the first piece of interesting news found this week. A portable, UAV detector that uses a log periodic antenna array, the Masterok appears to be providing Russian forces with some utility across the front line.
A simple, handheld system compiled of an easy-to-handle antenna paired to an LCD display, the Masterok provides a portable system to alert troops of drones in their vicinity. It’s worth noting that the Ukrainian source points out that Ukrainian forces have access to a similar system.
Intercepted Feeds
Our next post highlights just how critical electronic warfare strategies are across the frontline. Pointing out a situation where enemy forces were able to intercept a drone video feed, the drone would eventually betray the position of the ground crew as it returned to re-arm.
Despite being a short, simple post, from an analysis point it’s a sobering read as it shows just how intense the battle for the spectrum has become. Having an edge, even if only for a short period of time, becomes a crucial part of being able to reduce the effectiveness of drones operating along the front lines.
Electronic Detection
Our next post highlights some of the evolutions that in-service designs have encountered in an attempt to improve their overall efficiency. While the system mentioned is able to detect and jam a system automatically, it relies on a few modifications to help draw attention to the fact drones are operating in the area.
This shows two distinct modifications. The first is a flashing LED light, that activates when the system detects a drone in its vicinity. The next is an audible alarm to help identify the same. While there is value in automatic systems, clearly both sides are looking to give their troops an easy-to-interpret way of being notified of drone activity.
Wild Weasel Drones
As drone warfare has evolved, we’ve seen a notable overlap in terms of existing air warfare strategies. A natural evolution of this is the wild weasel type concept that uses the emissions of an enemy system as an attack vector. The AGM-88 HARM missile is a great example of this, being used by F-16 aircraft to attack enemy radars that are transmitting.
This post highlights that similar, drone-based concepts are also being researched. With drones emitting control and video signals, a system that can automatically identify and prosecute these systems would be a huge advantage.
The post highlights that this is an ongoing research field however, it also reveals that to date, there are still no systems able to fulfil this requirement. Interestingly enough though, the post also highlights that Ukrainian forces are also working on a solution to this problem as well. Will we see a wild weasel drone soon? It’s entirely possible.
Drones Carrying Drones
This is all pretty interesting stuff but the best comes last, with a post about a unique drone mothership concept. Using a large, fixed-wing design the system is able to carry multiple, FPV quadcopters as a payload.
It’s a short post but it comes with an interesting video that helps show what the concept has to offer. While it's only carrying two quadcopters in the images, the post does point out that up to six quadcopters are able to be carried.
Known as the Dovbush, it’s reported that the system is in widespread use across the frontlines, where it’s reported to have both offensive and defensive capabilities. It’s fair to say that as each month passes, we’re seeing more and more development that focuses on unique ways to leverage the capabilities offered by drone-based systems.
