North Korea, the country without internet or the paradise of hackers?

The propaganda makes them look like a country with no internet, where only a privileged few can access the world wide web, and the majority of the population can only navigate a national, highly censored and policed intranet.
Yet at the same time, these same media outlets would have us believe that North Korea is the source of some of the world's most sophisticated and damaging cyberattacks, affecting banks, businesses, governments, and even cryptocurrencies. According to a United Nations report, North Korean hackers have stolen more than $2 billion in crypto assets since 2018, which they believe is a major source of funding for the regime.
How is it possible that a country without internet has the best hackers in the world? ΒΏis not this a contradiction? Or is there something they are not telling us?
There are several possible explanations for this apparent paradox. One of them is that North Korea is not as isolated as we are led to believe, and that it has access to the internet through other countries, such as China or Russia. Another is that they have a highly-skilled tech elite, trained in specialized universities and supported by the government to develop their cyber skills. A third hypothesis is that North Korea does not act alone, but collaborates with other state or non-state actors, which provide it with resources, infrastructure, or information to carry out its operations. Finally, it may all be nothing more than a crude narrative of fallacies and North Korea is only the "scapegoat" where others hide.

Whatever the truth, the truth is that hackers, regardless of nationality, pose a real threat to global cybersecurity, and their actions have economic, political, and social consequences. For this reason, it is necessary that the media inform us rigorously and transparently on this issue, and that they not limit themselves to repeating clichΓ©s and stereotypes about the Asian country. Governments and international organizations also need to take steps to prevent and combat cyberattacks, and to protect users and businesses that use the internet and cryptocurrencies.
Also, it is ethically wrong to just think that North Korea is just a country without internet or a hacker's paradise. North Korea is also a complex country, with a history, a culture and a society that deserve to be known and respected. It is, like all the nations on this, our only planet, a country with problems, challenges and aspirations, which needs to dialogue and cooperate with the rest of the world. Perhaps in this way we can build a safer and more peaceful future for all.
In closing, I would like to share a very personal consideration. I think that this issue makes us reflect more deeply on the way we relate to other countries, it is our duty to be able to understand that the culture, politics or economy of other nations can be very different from the ones we know. I believe that each people deserves respect even if it is against our beliefs and convictions, and that they have the right to choose their own destiny, whether we like it or not. It is important that we seek meeting points and cooperation with North Korea (and many other countries of the so-called "Axis of Evil"), instead of isolating or confronting them, that we recognize their potential and aspirations, instead of denying or fearing them. We cannot (nor do we have the right) to impose our vision of the world on others, nor judge them without knowing them, only then can we live in peace and harmony.
