Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is considered one of the holiest months for Muslims around the world. It is observed by fasting from dawn until sunset, refraining from consuming food, drinking liquids, smoking, and engaging in sinful behavior during daylight hours. The fast, known as sawm, is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is obligatory for adult Muslims, with certain exceptions such as illness, pregnancy, breastfeeding, menstruation, or traveling. The fast is broken each day with a meal called iftar, often beginning with the eating of dates and followed by a larger meal. Ramadan is not only about abstaining from food and drink but also about spiritual reflection, increased prayer, charity, and community involvement. Many Muslims also strive to read the entire Quran during this month, as it is believed that the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad during Ramadan. The end of Ramadan is marked by the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, which is a joyous occasion involving communal prayers, feasting, and the giving of gifts to family and friends. It's a time of gratitude, forgiveness, and renewal of faith for Muslims worldwide.
