Law of UX- 05
41
Have you ever been in a situation whereby you had too many options to choose from? Probably in a grocery store or when you trying to pick a new shirt or shoe.
The fifth law of UX is the Hick's Law
The fifth law of UX ( User Experience ) covers that. It states that the time it will take to make a decision increases with the total number of choices and with its complexity.
Thngs to note when putting this Law into use,
- Try as much as possible to minimize the choices in a situation whereby response time is critical to aid in the increase of decision time.
- In order to decrease cognitive load, break down complex tasks into simpler steps. This will help the user greatly.
- Avoid the urge to overwhelm users by highlighting recommended options.
- Make use of progressive on-boarding, to minimise cognitive load for new users, Take Bulb for instance, when new users try to signup, it uses a step by step progress to onboard new users.
- Be careful not to over simplify to the point of abstraction.
