Which team has the most World Series wins? The pinnacle of Major League Baseball, the best team from the National League (NL) and American League (AL) battle it out to be crowned as champions.

There have been six teams that haven’t won a World Series yet. For those that have, let’s take a look at which teams have the most World Series wins.
10. Atlanta Braves – 4 World Series
The Atlanta Braves were founded as the Boston Red Stockings in 1871 and underwent multiple name changes throughout the franchise’s history – names which included the Beaneaters, Doves and Bees.
In 1941 the franchise settled with the name the Braves, relocated from Boston to Milwaukee in 1953, and then to Atlanta in 1966.
The franchise has won four World Series titles, first as the Boston Braves in 1914, then as the Milwaukee Braves in 1957. In Atlanta, the Braves won the 1995 World Series and most recently in 2021.
Ty Cobb was the greatest hitter in MLB history and one of the best baseball players of all time. He spent 22 seasons in Detroit before a move to Philadelphia in 1927.
Detroit would have to wait until 1935 for their first World Series success, beating the Chicago Cubs in six games. The Tigers also went on to win the World Series in 1945, 1968 and 1984.
8. Pittsburgh Pirates – 5 World Series
The Pittsburgh Pirates have the best MLB stadium playing out of PNC Park since 2001 but they’re yet to win a World Series at the famed venue. Pittsburgh have had five World Series wins, with championships in 1909, 1925, 1960, 1971 and 1979.
Stars such as Honus Wagner and Roberto Clemente have starred for the Pirates in the past. The most memorable World Series moment for Pittsburgh was Bill Mazeroski’s walk-off home run in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series.
7. Cincinnati Reds – 5 World Series
Founded in 1881 as the Cincinnati Red Stockings, the Reds may be struggling off the ball park, but they’ve won five championships and are seventh on the list of Most World Series wins.
The “Big Red Machine” team of the 1970s dominated the National League, and are considered one of the best teams in baseball history across any decade. Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench and Tony Perez all dominated as the Reds won back-to-back World Series titles in 1975 and 1976.
In addition to their 1919 and 1940 successes, the 1990 World Series win for Cincinnati is considered one of the biggest upsets in Major League Baseball history. The Reds went on to sweep the heavily favored Oakland Athletic.
6. Los Angeles Dodgers – 7 World Series
The Dodgers won their first World Series in 1955 as the Brooklyn Dodgers in a team that featured Jackie Robinson, who broke the “baseball color line” which ended racial segregation in Major League Baseball.
To start the 1958 season the Dodgers relocated to Los Angeles and won the franchise’s second championship in only their second season in their new city.
All up the Dodgers have won a pair of World Series championships in the 1950s, 60s, 80s, and most recently in 2020. They’re one of the most popular MLB teams and have a fanbase far beyond Southern California.
5. San Francisco Giants – 8 World Series
The San Francisco Giants have won 8 World Series, five during their time in New York and a further three following relocation to San Francisco in 1958. The franchise has been blessed by some of the best baseball players of all time including Barry Bonds and Willie Mays.
During the 2000s the Giants ended a long 56-year World Series championship drought. The Giants formed a dynasty during the decade, winning championships in 2010, 2012 and 2014.
They became just the second team in National League history to win three titles in a five-year period with stars including Buster Posey, Matt Cain, Madison Bumgarner and Buster Posey.
4. Oakland Athletics – 9 World Series
While in Philadelphia, the Athletics had considerable success, winning three titles between 1910-1913, and have won five in total. Following relocation to Kansas City between 1955-1967, they failed to win a championship.
The “Swingin’ A’s” team of the 70s was one of the best teams in baseball history. They formed a dynasty and accomplished a three-peat by winning the World Series in 1972, 1973 and 1974, featuring the likes of Reggie Jackson, Rollie, Fingers, Catfish Hunter and Dick Williams.
Oakland have had a drought following their ninth World Series championship in 1989 and are looking at avoiding relocation.
3. Boston Red Sox – 9 World Series
The Boston Red Sox are one of the most famous baseball teams in the world and had considerable success in the 1910s with four World Series wins during the decade starring no other than Babe Ruth, the best player in baseball history.
Boston was then plagued by the “Curse of the Bambino,” a superstitious curse surrounding the 86-year championship drought following the sale of Ruth to the Yankees in 1920.
The drought ended in 2004 following a World Series sweep over the Cardinals. The Red Sox have seen a resurgence in recent times, winning championships in 2007, 2013 and 2018, led by stars including Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, David Ortiz, and Pedro Martinez.
2. St. Louis Cardinals – 11 World Series
The St. Louis Cardinals are second on the list of most World Series wins with 11 championships, the most of any National League team, and behind only the New York Yankees across the MLB.
St. Louis has been blessed with stars such as Stan Musial, Bob Gibson and Albert Pujols, and they’ve been one of the most consistent teams in the league since being founded in 1882.
The most recent World Series championship for the Cardinals was in 2011, beating the Texas Rangers in game seven. They overcame a two-run deficit in Game 6 heading into the ninth to rescue the series, and then went on to win Game 7.
1. New York Yankees – 27 World Series
The New York Yankees are the most popular MLB team, and have the most World Series wins with 27 in total. Between 1921 and 1958 the Yankees won 18 World Series, and from 1960 to 2009, they won another nine.
New York’s market has allowed the Yankees to build a fanbase from across the world as well as attract a high payroll to attract and keep some of the best baseball players of all time including Babe Ruth, Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle.
The Yankees have built a culture of winning and won an incredible 15 championships from 16 World Series appearances between 1927-1953. Their last World Series win came in 2009, defeating the Philadelphia Phillies in six games.
