Online shopping today has become almost entirely dependent on financial institutions that process electronic payments as a trusted third party. Although this system works quite well for most transactions, it still has the weakness of being a trust-based model. Since financial institutions cannot avoid mediating disputes, completely irreversible transactions are not actually possible. The expense of the mediation service increases transaction costs and prevents small payment transactions as it limits the smallest possible transaction amount, while the lack of ability to receive irreversible payments for irreversible services is even more costly. The need to trust increases with the possibility of reversing the transaction. Sellers should view their customers with suspicion and push them to provide more information than might otherwise be needed. A certain amount of fraud is considered inevitable. These costs and payment uncertainties can be eliminated by using physical money in face-to-face shopping, but there is no mechanism to make payment through a communication channel without a trusted third party. What we need is cryptographic proof instead of trust.
