WEB2 - The Death Of An Era & The Rise Of WEB3
The Tide Is Turning
Isn’t it strange how just months ago, I began writing about the restrictions and limitations within the WEB2 world and how I envisioned an increase and acceleration in this regard? Who would have guessed that the much-loved Musk would impose such heavy restrictions on the millions of loyal Twitter users who frequent the platform each and every day? Yes, WEB2 (social media]) is far from dead. However, what we are beginning to see unfold are the initial stages of what will later be identified as the beginning of the end.
New technologies do not simply replace existing technologies and ideas overnight. To think that would be a little naive. However, what we do tend to see is a slow awakening toward a superior alternative. Eventually, a significant amount of individuals, companies, and other entities catch on. It is at this particular point that the shift begins to accelerate and can now appear to be an “overnight phenomenon”. However, in reality, the process began many years ago.
I believe we are now in the initial stages of this process. How long it takes for WEB3 to achieve meaningful adoption is very closely linked to how quickly and how far WEB2 entities are prepared to push their users. For example, take a look at Reddit and its recent policy change. True decentralized WEB3 platforms have no official policies. There can, however, be unspoken rules that tend to govern the platform. However, there is no official enforcement of policies and practices.
Certain practices can be frowned upon by the majority of the community and even ignored. Essentially, users who indulge in such practices end up isolating themselves. Decentralization tends to have a certain degree of self-governance in that without policing… problems are often eradicated from within. There is no top-down dynamic required. The community has a way of separating the wheat from the chaff.
Big Names Create Big Moves
In the run-up to 2020, we heard a lot of expressed doubt as to whether Crypto would even survive, never mind experience significant adoption. However, look at where we are today. Many significant and prominent players within the world of finance and business are scurrying to become a part of this monumental shift. Much of this can be attributed to what took place in 2020. Respected individuals such as Paul Tudor Jones, Michael Saylor, and others triggered a paradigm shift.
This is often how the awakening transitions from slow and sluggish to what appears to be almost instantaneous. Influential individuals and companies often tend to be at the forefront of significant recognition, adoption, and euphoria. We are likely to see a similar dynamic unfold regarding WEB3. Regardless of what transpires in the short to medium term, I believe that the true winners of tomorrow are going to be those who have chosen to build on WEB3 during the formative years.
Final Thoughts
The most common response to WEB3 is that there is still a long way to go and that WEB2 is still very much ruling the roost. True… to a point. However, are you happy to sit around waiting until the 11th hour while simultaneously squandering one of the best opportunities of the decade? That’s an important question that everyone needs to internalize and answer. Unless you are a high-profile WEB2 influencer or content creator, you are going to have a tough time carving out a niche for yourself in a completely new environment.
Don’t get caught thinking that time is on your side. Things can change in a moment. As with everything, eventually, there is a tipping point. WEB2 overlords will soon begin flexing and are likely to eventually lose the perfect balance between control and ensuring users are somewhat satisfied. It’s a fine line… and it’s very easy to cross. Anyway, catch you next time. All the best!
