Harry Potter is a series of seven fantasy novels written by British author J. K. Harry Potter is the main character in the series. He discovered that he was a wizard at the age of eleven, living with his aunt, uncle and cousin the Dursleys in the fictional town of Little Whinging in Surrey. He lives in the ordinary world of non-magical people known as Muggles. Harry Potter's talent for magic is innate, and children with such abilities are invited to attend special magical schools that teach the skills necessary to succeed in the wizarding world. While Harry knows that his parents died in a traffic accident, he will realize that this is not the case with the events that begin with the letter given by Rubeus Hagrid, the keeper of the keys and school grounds at Hogwarts. Harry's Muggle -born witch mother, Lily Potter, and his wizard father, James Potter, were killed by Voldemort with a killing curse when Harry was one year old. Harry was freed from this killing curse and became famous in the wizarding world as the "Boy Who Lived". He begins to progress towards becoming a skilled wizard in his first year, with dangerous and exciting adventures awaiting him in this mysterious and huge school, where he will study for six years. At the same time, as Harry develops through adolescence, he learns to overcome the problems he encounters: friendships, crushes, romantic relationships, schoolwork and exams, trying to face ordinary teenage challenges like anxiety, depression, stress, and more. As he begins to learn about the wizarding life, events excitingly drag Harry to his destiny.
Each novel follows a year in Harry's life, from 1991 to 1998.

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry [ edit | change source ]

Main article: Hogwarts
Hogwarts as used in the movies
Hogwarts, in short, is one of the prestigious schools of the magic world, located in the mountainous region of Scotland .
The exact location of the school was never revealed because it was rendered unscratchable. To Muggles, the school looks like an old, abandoned castle. Similarly, most wizarding schools are guarded to prevent their teaching methods from being exposed and to protect students and schools from any harm.
Hogwarts was founded around 990 AD by the greatest wizards and witches of the age: Godric Gryffindor , Helga Hufflepuff , Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin . All four school buildings bear their surnames. Each represents an aspect of the personality they want to bring out in new students.
Students who will enter the seven-year education process are determined by letters sent at the age of eleven. In those letters received by students, the materials and clothes required for the first grade are listed. According to this list, students buy magical items and books for school from the wizard market called Diagon Alley. They arrive at the platform at quarter past 9 and arrive at school via the Hogwarts Express. Hogwarts opens on September 1st every year, and that day always falls on a Monday . Every year, a selection ceremony is held to determine which building the first graders will go to. This selection is made by the " Sorting Hat ". This Sorting Hat also belongs to Godric Gryffindor . The Sorting Hat selects houses based on certain dominant characteristics. This hat selects the buildings of the first graders who have just started school, but the sorting hat can also choose according to the wishes of the student. After this selection, the student begins his witchcraft training for 7 years, depending on his house. Every good or bad move they make makes their building gain or lose points. Every building wants to have the most points at the end of the term, because the building with the highest score at the end of the year receives the department cup. The department cup stays in the teacher's office of that building until the end of the next year.
There is no one who knows all the intricate rooms and passages of Hogwarts Castle, which is the most magnificent structure on the Hogwarts campus. The frequent change of stairs between floors is one of the reasons why this moving castle cannot be fully learned. But the Marauder's Map shows all of Hogwarts except for areas that cannot be marked. Marauder's Map ; Moony ( Remus Lupine ), Wormtail ( Peter Pettigrew ), Padfoot ( Sirius Black ) and Prongs ( James Potter ), in short, were made by the Marauders. The interior of the school, which was influenced by the 18th century architecture of the period in which the school was founded, is decorated with statues and portraits of famous wizards and witches and many objects related to the world of magic.
In addition to the castle, Hogwarts also has a lake surrounded by the castle (the Black Lake), a Quidditch pitch, Herbology (a branch of science that studies plants in the wizarding world) classrooms, and Hagrid's hut and garden. The school is surrounded by the Forbidden Forest , which is off-limits to students .
The Turkish translation of the school's Latin motto, "Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus", is "Never Tickle a Sleeping Dragon".

Turkish translation [ edit | change source ]

The FIRST book of the series was published in Turkish for the first time in 1999 under the name Harry Potter Magical Stone , [6] with Mustafa Bayındır 's translation by Dost Kitabevi . After this edition, which did not attract enough attention , Yapı Kredi Publications purchased the publishing rights of the series and republished the first book in 2001 under the name Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and with Ülkü Tamer 's translation. The next books of the series were translated into Turkish by Sevin Okyay and her son Kutlukhan Kutlu . After the second and third books were translated into Turkish with a delay, starting from the fourth book, the books were published in Turkey at almost the same time as the rest of the world.
The Turkish translations made by Sevin Okyay and Kutlukhan Kutlu were found successful. [7]
Here are some interesting Turkish equivalents that the translators found for the terms found in the English version of the book:
EnglishTurkishAurorSeherbazBoggartBöcürtDeluminatorpuffDementorSoul-suckingElfhouse elfGhoulgulyabaniHorcruxHortkulukParselmouthDeltaPensivethoughtfulTrollIfritWizengamotWizengamot
In addition, in the books , the name "Marvolo" was translated as "Marvoldo" in order to translate the anagram "Tom Marvolo Riddle" - "I am Lord Voldemort" into Turkish without any problems. Thus, the anagram was reflected in the Turkish translation as "Tom Marvoldo Riddle" - "My name is Lord Voldemort".

Complementary works [ edit | change source ]

J.K. Rowling expanded the Harry Potter universe with several short books produced for various charities. In 2001, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. (a Hogwarts textbook) and Quidditch Through the Ages (a book that Harry read in his spare time). The proceeds from the sales of these two books were donated to the charity Comic Relief . In 2007, J.K. Rowling hand-wrote seven copies of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, which contain the tales from the final novel. One of the manuscript copies was auctioned to raise money for the Children's High Level Group, which helps mentally disabled children in impoverished countries. Printed copies of the book went on sale on December 4, 2008. All three of these books contain additional information about the wizarding world that is not included in the novels.
