4. Challenges and Opportunities in Ocean-Based Climate Solutions

As the climate crisis intensifies, there is growing recognition of the need to protect and enhance the ocean's role in climate regulation. However, this requires substantial investment in sustainable practices and technologies.

  • Ocean-Based Carbon Removal: Innovative approaches, such as marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR), offer potential solutions for enhancing the ocean’s capacity to sequester carbon. These methods include ocean fertilization, alkalinity enhancement, and artificial upwelling.   • Sustainable Ocean Economy: Investing in a sustainable ocean economy could significantly contribute to climate mitigation efforts.
