Isaac Newton (b. 4 January 1643, Woolsthorpe – d. 31 March 1727, Kensington) was an English physicist, mathematician, astronomer, inventor, alchemist, theologian and philosopher. He laid the foundations of classical physical mechanics with his book Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica (Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy) published in 1687, and this work became one of the most important scientific books in world history. With this work, he put forward the law of universal gravitation and the three laws of motion, which are named after him, and this effect he created became one of the milestones in the history of science.Newton's three laws of universal gravitation and motion dominated the scientific world for the next three centuries.

Newton showed that the movements of objects on earth and the movements of objects in the sky are governed by the same natural laws with the consistency between his law of gravity and the law of planetary motion of the German astronomer Johannes Kepler. Newton also developed the first reflecting telescope and created a color theory as a result of his observation that white light forms a spectrum of different colors when exposed to a prism.

Isaac Newton is considered by today's scientists to be one of the most influential people in the history of science. In the millennium vote held with 100 leading physicists in late 1999, Isaac Newton ranked 2nd after Albert Einstein among the best physicists of all time.[6][7] In the book The 100 Most Influential People Who Direct the World, published by American astrophysicist and author Michael H. Hart in 1978, Newton was ranked 2nd and above all scientists, including Albert Einstein. Famous science fiction writer Isaac Asimov also referred to Newton as "the greatest scientist in history".
