Edson Arantes do Nascimento ( Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈɛtsõ (w)ɐˈɾɐ̃tʃiz du nɐsiˈmẽtu] ; 23 October 1940, Três Corações – 29 December 2022, Morumbi ), better known as Pelé ( Portuguese pronunciation: [peˈlɛ] ), is a former Brazilian forward who played as a forward . he is a football player. [1] The 1279 goals he scored in 1363 matches, including friendly matches, from 1956 until his retirement in 1977 are included in the Guinness World Records . [2] Pelé, considered one of the best football players of all time; Along with footballers such as Franz Beckenbauer , Alfredo Di Stéfano and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, he was also described as "the best" by FIFA . [3] [4] In 2000, he won the FIFA Player of the Century award together with Diego Maradona .
Pelé started playing for Santos when he was fifteen and for the Brazil national football team when he was sixteen . His goal in the 1958 World Cup final at the age of seventeen made him the youngest player to score in a World Cup final. Brazil also won the 1962 World Cup , but Pelé was injured in the group stage and could not play for the rest of the tournament. He was at the center of the third championship by playing with four goals and seven assists in the 1970 World Cup . He won three World Cups (1958, 1962, 1970) in his fourteen-year national team career and became the only football player in history to achieve this. [5] With 77 goals scored in 92 matches, he is one of Brazil's two top scorers, along with Neymar .
Pelé spent the majority of his club career at Santos, winning a total of twenty-five trophies there. In 1962, he brought the club its first ever Libertadores trophy, and then became champion again in 1963. In his two Intercontinental Cup finals as Libertadores champions ( 1962 , 1963 ), he scored nine goals in four matches against Benfica and Milan respectively; Santos won both finals. He spent the last two years of his career with the New York Cosmos and his number ten jersey was retired. [6]
In 1999, he was selected as the "athlete of the century" by the International Olympic Committee . [7] Time included Pelé among the 100 most important people of the 20th century . [8] After his retirement, he worked for UNICEF in addition to his activities as a football ambassador . Pelé, who founded his own foundation to alleviate poverty and provide access to education for underprivileged children, [9] also served as the Brazilian Minister of Sports from 1995 to 1998. [10]

Pelé was born on October 23, 1940. He was nicknamed Pepe by his family , but his cousins and little friends gave him the nickname ' Peli' , which means naughty , and this nickname eventually became Pelé. He was shining shoes until he was discovered at the age of 11. De Brito , who discovered him 4 years later , one day told Santos ' managers , "This kid will be the best football player in the world." said. The next season, Pelé proved the truth of this statement when he became the star player of the league.

Pelé scored four goals in a match 30 times and scored a hat-trick in 92 matches.
A 2-day ceasefire was declared in the war with Biafra in order for Nigeria to watch Pelé's match .
In another incident, after Pelé was sent off in a match played in the Brazilian League , the fans rioted and put the referee in a difficult situation. Thereupon, Pelé returned to the game 15 minutes later. The most striking thing in this incident is that no penal action was taken against the referee, and even the referee was appreciated.
He is the first player to receive the 2013 FIFA Ballon d'Or Prix d'Honneur award.

In late November 2022, Pelé was admitted to the Albert Einstein Israelite hospital in São Paulo due to complications due to a respiratory infection and colon cancer . Five weeks before his death, the hospital said his health was deteriorating as his cancer progressed. According to the statement made by Albert Einstein Hospital, Pelé died on December 29, 2022, in the hospital where he was treated for multiple organ failure and bowel cancer. [13] [14]
