The Future of Privacy, Social Media, and Web3
A lot has changed when it comes to the Internet, social media, and data as a whole. I remember when I was young, having to wait for my modem to connect me to the Internet. I remember every day after school, signing into my AOL account to talk to my friends. I remember when my dad needed to use the phone, I had to disconnect from the Internet. It's crazy to think that was only roughly 25 years ago. So much has changed since then. We didn't think too much about privacy back then (at least I didnt) because this was new technology, and we were more stoked about this new way of communication than thinking too much about what was happening in the background. Also i was only around 12 when I started getting into the internet so not much going on up there other then gaming, talking crap, and checking out things I probably shouldnt have been.
Well, as the years have passed, we have seen companies come and go. We've seen speeds get faster, and connecting to the Internet has become a worldwide norm. There are an estimated 6.7 billion people who own a smartphone these days, which is roughly 69% of the world’s population. The idea of constant surveillance is not just an idea anymore. If you don't think you can be tracked right now to your exact location because of your smartphone, if you don't think social media is being used to manipulate our decision-making and change our way of thinking, then you might need to start doing some research. These big tech companies know more about you than you know about yourself.
More and more companies are being exposed for selling/sharing our data. Platforms like Facebook, TikTok, and pretty much any other big-name social media platform have been caught stealing our data and selling it to the highest bidder. TikTok is actually one of the most terrifying of them all. Did you know they were sued by the US for allegedly breaking children's privacy data? The average (8 - 10) child is on their phone for roughly 6 hours a day! 32% of TikToks daily users are between the ages of 10 and 19. That means that a good amount of our kids are being fed information by a communist controled social media platform. If that does not raise red flags for you then I do not know what else to say.
Every time one of these companies are caught doing something illegal all they need to do is throw a litlte money around and the problems go away. Well eventually the public will wake up and realize what these companies are doing.
It used to be whoever controls the money controls the world. Well the new saying should be whoever controls the data controls the world. This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how our information is being used without our consent and possibly to change our way of thinking. All it takes is a couple searches to see how many times these companies have overused their digital power.
We've come a long way since the days of dial-up and AOL chat rooms, but with this progress has come new challenges that we must navigate carefully. It's more important than ever to be aware of how our data is being used and to take steps to protect our privacy in this digital age.
This is one of the main reasons I am constantly talking about Web3. Taking back our data and actually earning from our time and attention. It is a new age and when more people start realizing the potential of Web3 then we will slowly see these major companies disappear into the digital abyss of failed platforms. I know it is hard to change and it is uncomfortable and confusing at times but getting into Web3 now might change your life forever. Being able to earn from you time and attention is going to change everything.
