Top AI Side Hustle To Try in 2024
Harnessing AI’s Potential While Avoiding Its Pitfalls
AI art tools like Midjourney are exploding in popularity. As an artist and side hustler, I was curious if I could actually make money creating and selling AI-generated art.
In this article, I’ll share my experience testing out an AI art business and provide tips for anyone looking to make their own income through artificial intelligence art.
We strongly recommend that you check out our guide on how to take advantage of AI in today’s passive income economy.
Getting Started With Midjourney
Midjourney is an AI system that creates images based on text prompts you provide. To get started, I went to midjourney.com and clicked “Join the beta” to connect my Discord account.
Once connected, Midjourney gave me 25 free credits to generate images. I wanted to save my credits for now, so I explored the Discord channels to learn more about how Midjourney works.
To create an image, you type “/imagine” followed by a text description. For example:
/imagine a shark with a space helmet floating through the stars
You can choose from multiple generated images, and also create variations by providing an existing image’s seed number in your prompt.
By playing around with different prompts and seed images, I realized Midjourney’s potential for creating unique, customized artworks. But could I actually make money selling AI art? It was time to find out.
Selling AI Artwork on Fiverr
For my first monetization attempt, I set up a Fiverr account to offer Midjourney art services.
In Fiverr’s Graphic & Design category, I saw gigs for logo design, book illustrations, custom portraits, and more. Some sellers even advertised services using AI art.
I decided to offer custom Midjourney art based on buyer requests. My gig description emphasized that images would be created fully by AI.
Over the next few weeks, I got occasional orders for $5 AI artworks. Customers enjoyed the novelty of AI-generated images. However, at just $5 per sale minus Fiverr fees, it would take a lot of orders to add up to significant income.
Creating AI Digital Downloads on Etsy
Next, I tried creating a selection of AI art to sell as digital downloads on Etsy. I focused my shop on space-themed prints that customers could order and download for printing or merchandise.
Using Midjourney prompts like “astronaut floating in space” and “ alien planet orbiting a black hole”, I generated 15 digital art prints to upload.
For the first few weeks, I got some favorite but almost no purchases. To improve my shop, I added more prints in different themes like nature, animals, and fantasy. I also included more descriptive listings with detailed tags.
Gradually I started receiving more orders, averaging 2–3 sales per week. My bestselling prints were colorful nature landscapes. At $10-$15 per download, a few sales per week provided me with supplemental income from my AI art shop.
Tips for Creating Quality AI Artworks
Through my Fiverr and Etsy experiments, I found some best practices for generating AI art that sells:
- Use detailed prompts: Be as specific as possible when describing the image you want. The more information you provide, the better the output.
- Try different styles: Add stylistic keywords like “impressionist”, “retro”, “minimalist” to create a variety of looks.
- Use the same seeds: When you get an image you like, reuse its seed to get similar versions.
- Focus on emotions: Prompts that evoke feelings, like “a cute puppy cuddling with its mother” perform better than generic descriptions.
- Crop creatively: The full AI images can be oddly proportioned. Cropping into a specific section makes for a better print.
- Choose vibrant designs: Bright, contrasting colors tend to attract more attention and sales.
By incorporating these tips into my image prompts, I was able to improve the quality of my AI art significantly.
Should You Start an AI Art Business?
Selling AI-generated art through Fiverr and Etsy provided me with some side income, but not enough to replace a full-time job.
Here are a few pros and cons I experienced that can help you decide if an AI art business is right for you:
Pros:
- Low startup costs (just a Midjourney subscription)
- Unique artworks that can’t be created manually
- Fun way to learn about AI capabilities
- Flexible gig work from home
Cons:
- Need artistic eye for good prompts
- Hard to compete against major AI platforms
- Potential copyright/legal issues
- Unpredictable demand and income
Overall, I found experimenting with AI art sales rewarding, but challenging to scale into a standalone business. With AI art platforms advancing so rapidly, it may be difficult for individuals to keep up.
However, someone with strong artistic talent, marketing skills, and passion for technology may find more success. It’s also wise to diversify your income streams rather than relying solely on AI art sales.
If you’re interested in monetizing AI art, I recommend starting small — create accounts on Fiverr and Etsy to get your feet wet. Use my tips to make quality designs that sell. And don’t quit your day job just yet.
Over time, you can evaluate if your AI art shop is growing and worth further investment. Be prepared to pivot and keep innovating, as the world of AI art changes fast.
Let me know in the comments if you try selling AI-generated art! I’d love to hear about your experiences with this emerging business model.
