The letter warned that the algorithm, called Q* (pronounced Q-Star), is capable of generating computer code from natural language, which could have revolutionary applications in various fields, but could also be used for malicious purposes, such as creating viruses, hacking systems or manipulating information. He also expressed concern that Q* did not have sufficient safety and ethical measures, and that it could escape human control and cause irreparable harm to society.
