In Nigeria, the prevailing economic challenges often elicit a remarkable response: candid smiles in trying times. Despite facing adversity, Nigerians display a docile disposition, using phrases like "God dey" and "e go better" as psychological buffers. These expressions mask underlying suffering, fostering a culture of resilience amidst hardship.
As Fela Kuti famously sang in his iconic song "Suffering and Smiling," the lyrics resonate deeply with the Nigerian experience, highlighting the paradox of enduring suffering while maintaining a facade of contentment. This phenomenon reflects the indomitable spirit of Nigerians, who, despite their struggles, find solace in music, community, and faith.
However, while resilience is commendable, it shouldn't overshadow the need for social activism to address systemic issues. Economic disparity, corruption, and inadequate governance perpetuate inequality, exacerbating poverty and hardship for many.
Fela aptly captured in his music, "Suffering and Smiling," Nigerians endure hardships with grace, but this should not be mistaken for acceptance or complacency. Instead, it is a call to action, a plea for change.

The poem below captures the essence of Nigerians' enduring spirit amid economic struggles, echoing Fela's message of resilience and hope:

Candid smiles amidst Teary eyes

Gives the mind the boost it needs

When tomorrow seems out of sight

It's all you need to pass the night

Candid smiles amidst Teary eyes

Take a man with enduring heart

Hiding his plight to brighten your sight

Amidst your times as trying as his

Nigeria needs more than smiles to overcome its economic challenges. Social activism is the "frown" crucial for advocating for change, holding leaders accountable, and implementing policies that prioritize the welfare of all citizens. While optimism is inherent in the Nigerian spirit, it must be coupled with proactive efforts to address the root causes of economic hardship. Only then can Nigerians truly experience a brighter tomorrow, where suffering is not merely endured but actively challenged and transformed.

The #EndSARS protest, which gained momentum in Nigeria in late 2020, stands as a powerful symbol of social activism in recent times. Rooted in widespread dissatisfaction with police brutality, corruption, and systemic injustice, the movement transcended its initial focus on disbanding the notorious Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and evolved into a broader call for accountability and reform. With millions of Nigerians taking to the streets and utilizing social media platforms to amplify their voices, the #EndSARS protest became a rallying cry against government neglect and abuse of power. At its core, the movement sought to hold leaders accountable and demand tangible improvements in governance to ensure the well-being and rights of all Nigerians. Though the protest faced challenges and setbacks, its enduring legacy underscores the resilience and determination of Nigerian youth in advocating for positive change and social justice.
