Alarming Rise in Anti-Trans Violence

2020 proves to be a tragic year for the trans and gender nonconforming community in the United States. The period from October 2019 to September 2020 saw a 6% increase in reported murders compared to the previous year, with at least 350 known cases. TvT, a research arm of Transgender Europe, gathered this data as part of their annual Trans Murder Monitoring project. The rise is concerning, signaling an alarming trend since TvT began its analysis in 2008.

Global Overview of Anti-Trans Homicides

Brazil tops the list with 152 recorded murders, while Mexico and the United States follow closely at #2 and #3, with 57 and 28 cases, respectively. TvT notes a disturbing pattern exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, racism, and police brutality, putting trans and gender-diverse lives at even greater risk. The impact of COVID-19 is disproportionately affecting marginalized groups, emphasizing societal gaps and inequalities.

Disheartening Statistics and Unreported Cases

The analysis reveals that 98% of globally murdered individuals were trans women or transfeminine people. In the United States, 79% of victims were people of color. However, TvT acknowledges that these numbers are not comprehensive, relying on reported incidents. Many cases go unreported or are misreported, with victims often deadnamed and misgendered. This lack of accurate reporting highlights the urgency for better, consistent reporting on anti-trans violence.

Remembering Transgender Lives Lost

The annual Trans Murder Monitoring update includes a 90-page index memorializing the lives lost. Notable recent cases in the U.S. include Aerrion Burnett and Tracy “Mia” Green, both Black transgender women. Their tragic deaths emphasize the need for justice and remembrance. As the Transgender Day of Remembrance approaches, the community honors these lives and advocates for a world free from transphobic violence.

2021 An even worse year for Transgender violence

Unprecedented Surge in Transgender Violence in 2021

The year 2021 witnessed an alarming escalation in violence against transgender and gender-diverse individuals, reaching an all-time high. Disturbingly, the already concerning trend observed in 2020 has intensified, with a notable surge in reported cases of hate violence targeting the transgender community. According to data compiled by Transrespect Versus Transphobia Worldwide (TvT), the number of known murders of transgender and gender-diverse people has seen a significant increase compared to the previous year. This unsettling rise raises urgent concerns about the safety and well-being of transgender individuals, highlighting the pressing need for greater awareness, advocacy, and systemic change to address the root causes of this pervasive issue.
