England suffered their first defeat since the World Cup as teenage star Endrick came off the bench to seal Brazil a late victory against Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 hopefuls.

After a build-up dominated by the brouhaha over an altered St George’s flag on the back of the new shirt and talk about the manager’s future, Saturday’s glamour friendly between these injury-hit sides failed to live up to the hype.

Southgate’s side survived a few scares on a night that was heading towards a goalless conclusion until 17-year-old Endrick’s first senior international goal secured a 1-0 win at a sold-out Wembley.

This was England’s first defeat since their World Cup quarter-final exit to France 15 months ago, with the meek end to their 10-match unbeaten run leading to early exits and some grumbles at the final whistle.

Brazil had been on a run of three straight losses but, under new boss Dorival Junior, had the best chances of a stop-start opening period that saw Lucas Paqueta hit the post and somehow escape a second yellow card.

Vinicius Jr and Raphinha also had chances for the Selecao, with the former’s late shot leading to teenager Endrick’s matchwinner as England made a poor start to a year they hope will go down in history.

Federico Bernardeschi shined and Tyrese Spicer scored his first MLS goal to propel Toronto FC to a 2-0 victory over Atlanta United at BMO Field.

The hosts opened the scoring near the end of the first half through the number one overall pick in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft Tyrese Spicer. The 23-year-old drifted inside Atlanta's penalty area before firing a shot near Brad Guzan's near post, as the veteran goalkeeper got a finger to the strike but was unable to keep it out. It was Spicer's first career goal in his first MLS start to put TFC up 1-0 in the first 45.

Toronto team captain Jonathan Osorio, who was substituted on in the second half, came so close to extending the home team's lead by scraping the inside of Guzan's post. However, the Reds managed to cash in their second goal of the night to put themselves in the driver's seat with a commanding 2-0 lead. Alonso Coello's saved effort fell into the path of Prince Osei Owusu, who made no mistake in front of an open goal.

The Reds took home all three points that may have came at a cost of an injured Lorenzo Insigne with fellow Italian Federico Bernardeschi flowing with confidence. Toronto truly look a different side this season compared to the one that finished at the bottom of the barrel last term.

On the other side, Atlanta looked dull for just about the entire contest and leave Toronto with plenty of questions for future international breaks without their stars Thiago Almada and Giorgos Giakoumakis.

Atlanta United player ratings ( 4-2-3-1 )
Brad Guzan started in goal for Atlanta

GK: Brad Guzan - 5/10 - He was beaten at his near post for the opening goal which isn't ideal and there wasn't much else for him to do on the final goal scored.

RB: Brooks Lennon - 6/10 - Worked tirelessly up-and-down the right-hand side of the pitch but it was all for naught.

CB: Noah Cobb - 5/10 - Had some decent moments in the backline but was too timid on Spicer's goal that showed his inexperience.

CB: Derrick Williams - 5/10 - Strong in the air but struggled in ground duels against the electric Bernardeschi.

LB: Ronald Hernandez - 6/10 - An average performance from the Venezuela international.

DM: Tristan Muyumba - 6.5/10 - Arguably Atlanta's second-best player that did his part to give the Five Stripes a chance.

DM: Dax McCarty - 6/10 - Had a few tidy moments on the ball and helped connect the defense to the frontline.

RM: Saba Lobjanidze - 6.5/10 - Atlanta's most threatening player who wasn't far away from scoring an absolute beauty of a strike early on.

AM: Nick Firmino - 5/10 - Looked a little out of sorts in the first half in his first start but improved in the second 45.

LM: Tyler Wolff - 5.5/10 - Served up an inviting cross for Lobjanidze to latch on to but was quiet outside of that brief moment.

ST: Jamal Thiare - 6/10 - Was isolated for most of the game as he didn't receive much service from his midfielders and wingers.

Substitutes
SUB: Xande Silva (58' for Wolff) - 6/10 - Was unable to do much on the rare occasions he was in possession.

SUB: Edwin Mosquera (75' for Firmino) - 6.5/10 - Provided an instant impact by driving at the Toronto defense -- something Atlanta was lacking in the game.

SUB: Derrick Etienne Jr. (88' for Lobjanidze) - N/A

Manager
Gonzalo Pineda - 5/10 - There won't be too many disagreeing with his team selection given the international break and injuries, but Atlanta looked within themselves for nearly the entire game -- a problem they encountered nearly all of last season away from home.

Player of the match - Federico Bernardeschi (Toronto FC)

Recent meetings between Liverpool and Brighton & Hove Albion have generally served up drama, goals and high-quality attacking football.

Two sides who prioritise what they do in the final third over their defensive solidity, it often leads to exciting clashes between the Reds and the Seagulls, with the teams ready to face off again after the March international break.

Roberto De Zerbi has been one of the names tipped to replace Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season and he will be offered an early audition at the end of the month, with Liverpool looking to end their recent hoodoo against the south coast side.

Here are how the sides have fared against one another in recent encounters.

The meeting between the two sides earlier this season was an end-to-end affair, with the points shared on the south coast. It was the hosts who made the significantly stronger start, Simon Adingra taking advantage of former Brighton midfielder Alexis Mac Allister's error to beat Alisson - who was culpable as well - from long range.

However, quickfire goals from Mohamed Salah within six minutes of one another before the break flipped the game on its head, with the Egyptian continuing his impressive scoring record against the Seagulls.

Ryan Gravenberch had the chance to wrap up the points but hit the bar from four yards out after the restart, with skipper Lewis Dunk proving Brighton's saviour with 12 minutes to play after converting Solly March's free kick.

Liverpool were arguably fortunate to be in the FA Cup fourth round during the 2022/23 season after some questionable officiating in their third round encounter with Wolverhampton Wanderers, but Brighton would send them packing with a late flourish at the Amex.

In the midst of a woeful run of form, Liverpool actually took the lead on the south coast thanks to Harvey Elliott's effort, but they were pegged back before half-time by Dunk - who has scored more goals against Liverpool (three) than any other side.

Just as it seemed the tie would be heading to an unwanted replay, Kaoru Mitoma took advantage of some sloppy Liverpool defending in second-half stoppage time to send the Seagulls into the fifth round.

Just two weeks prior to Liverpool's FA Cup exit at the hands of Brighton, they had suffered yet another humiliation on the road in the Premier League. The Reds were torn apart by De Zerbi's relentless machine, and were fortunate not to be behind before the break.

However, March would steal the show in the second half, netting twice in seven minutes shortly after the break to punish a woeful Liverpool. Danny Welbeck would add a third with ten minutes to play as Klopp's men left the Amex with their tails between their legs.

A devastating result for the Merseysiders, but a memorable victory for the Seagulls.

A six-goal thriller ended all square at Anfield in the first half of the 2022/23 campaign, with Roberto Firmino and Leandro Trossard taking the spotlight for Liverpool and Brighton respectively in De Zerbi's first game as Seagulls boss.

Brighton's Belgian fired the visitors into a two-goal lead within 17 minutes at Anfield, with Firmino pulling one back for the Reds before the break. The Brazilian forward added his second of the game shortly after half-time and the Liverpool comeback was completed by an Adam Webster own goal just ten minutes later.

However, Trossard would pop up to ruin the afternoon for Liverpool supporters, grabbing his hat-trick with eight minutes to play in a breathtaking encounter.

Liverpool were still chasing an unprecedented quadruple when they travelled to the south coast towards the end of the 2021/22 season, and they avoided a slip-up by beating Brighton 2-0 on the road.

Luis Diaz put Liverpool ahead after he latched on to Joel Matip's through ball, although he got absolutely flattened by goalkeeper Robert Sanchez for his troubles.

The Reds managed to double their advantage after the break and it was unsurprisingly Salah who put them two ahead, converting from the penalty spot to secure the points.
