7 NEW SaaS Ideas You Can Steal
Seven Promising SaaS Ideas and Why They Will Thrive
We are entering an exciting new era of software innovation powered by artificial intelligence. As someone who has been in the SaaS industry for over 15 years, I have witnessed several massive transformations — from on-premise to cloud, desktop to mobile, and now the rise of AI.
With each shift, new massive companies emerge while traditional vendors struggle to adapt. The winning startups recognize the opportunity early and build solutions specifically designed for the new tech stack. When I look back at the previous eras, the giant success stories seem obvious — of course those companies were destined for greatness! But at the time, it was unclear which specific businesses would dominate.
Hindsight is 20/20. By studying the past, however, we can predict the future. AI will undoubtedly enable a new generation of SaaS leaders. The companies that win big will follow the money and build AI copilots tailored to the most valuable enterprise roles.
In this 2500 word article, I will share my framework for identifying the 7 most promising SaaS ideas poised for massive success in the AI-powered decade ahead. Buckle up, here we go!
We strongly recommend that you check out our guide on how to take advantage of AI in today’s passive income economy.
SaaS Idea #1: The AI Copilot for CEOs
The chief executive officer sits at the top of the org chart for a reason — they have the biggest budget and greatest need for software support. If you want to build a multi-billion dollar enterprise SaaS company, serve the CEO.
While the product you create for small business CEOs versus Fortune 500 CEOs will differ greatly, there is tremendous potential at both ends of the spectrum. SMB founders need an easy-to-use AI assistant for basic business operations. Enterprise leaders require a sophisticated digital analyst capable of strategic recommendations.
But regardless of company size, all CEOs fundamentally want the same thing — an AI copilot that helps them make faster, better decisions to drive growth. The AI assistant of the future will provide an unfair advantage, synthesizing insights across the organization and advising the CEO where to focus their limited time.
Just imagine the possibilities — an AI system that provides accurate sales forecasts, identifies emerging consumer trends, flags risks, models strategic scenarios, and more. Founders will become superhuman. The AI copilot will be like a Chief of Staff with an MBA, Wall Street experience, and Oracle’s database living inside their computer.
While AI will impact every business function, the CEO copilot opportunity is incredibly exciting because it is greenfield. There is no entrenched legacy vendor that needs to be disrupted. Any startup can compete directly against the current status quo of CEOs flying solo without advanced analytics support.
My prediction — the AI copilot for CEOs will be one of the biggest SaaS ideas of the next decade. The company (or companies) that win this market will become decacorn powerhouses on the Fortune 500.
SaaS Idea #2: The AI Copilot for CMOs
The second most valuable role to support with AI is the Chief Marketing Officer. The rise of marketing technology over the past decade proves that CMOs hold massive budgets and appetite for software innovation.
Consumer behavior is changing rapidly, forcing marketing leaders to continuously adapt strategies and tactics. AI thrives in this environment of constant change and complexity. CMOs need copilots to make sense of the dizzying array of martech solutions while maximizing ROI across programs.
From my perspective, the CMO copilot opportunity breaks down into three key segments:
SMB Marketers — solopreneurs and small teams need an easy-to-use AI assistant focused on core channels — email, social media, basic web analytics. This is a volume play — target millions of underserved small businesses.
Mid-Market Marketer — the copilot for this segment equips fast-growing companies to punch above their weight class. Features like predictive lead scoring, personalized ad targeting, and multi-touch attribution will help mid-marketers optimize budgets and act like enterprises.
Enterprise Marketers — massive global brands need copilots that interoperate with their martech stack and deliver quantifiable incremental value. The AI assistant might, for example, analyze customer micro-segments and orchestrate omni-channel campaigns accordingly.
The AI copilot for CMOs has narrower competition than the CEO assistant concept but remains a greenfield opportunity. Point solutions exist but no vendor provides an integrated suite that supports the entire marketing workflow. The market is ready for disruption.
Building the AI copilot for marketers across any of these segments represents a billion dollar idea. Winning all three is a path to becoming a SaaS titan.
SaaS Idea #3: The AI Copilot for CROs
Chief revenue officers occupy the hot seat — responsible for hitting sales targets that fuel company growth. Pressure intensifies in tougher economic climates like we face heading into 2023. CROs need an AI copilot now more than ever.
Just like the scenarios described above, distinct copilot models can be tailored to specific CRO personas:
SMB Sales Leader — the solo entrepreneur selling their product needs a virtual assistant focused on prospecting, pipeline generation, and closing simple deals. Features like predictive lead scoring, email sequencing, and proposal generation will help them efficiently move prospects through the funnel.
Mid-Market Sales Leader — for companies scaling from $10M to $50M in revenue, the copilot provides automation for inside sales teams while optimizing territory and quota planning. The AI assistant becomes a force multiplier, allowing more revenue per sales rep.
Enterprise Sales Leader — Fortune 500 CROs require AI support for orchestrating complex sales processes across thousands of reps and intricately structured teams. Territory mapping, account sequencing, and playbook recommendation will maximize productivity.
This category has more competition than CEO or CMO copilots but I believe there is plenty of room for new innovators. SalesTech is overwhelmed with point solutions. The winning AI copilots will provide end-to-end workflow automation while remaining flexible enough to handle nuances of different selling motions.
Building the AI sales copilot tailored to any of these personas represents a massive SaaS opportunity over the next decade.
SaaS Idea #4: The AI Copilot for CTOs
While historically undervalued, developer tools represent a rapidly growing market — especially as the world becomes more digital. CTOs and dev teams need AI assistance to build products faster.
There are parallels to the segments outlined above:
Solo Developer — programming assistants like GitHub Copilot demonstrate the potential of AI to boost individual coder productivity on small projects.
SMB Dev Team — small development shops need copilots that can automate rote tasks while providing support on-demand as they build and maintain apps.
Enterprise Engineers — at scale, AI can analyze reams of system performance data to detect bugs, optimize infrastructure efficiency, and more.
CTOs face constant pressure to ship new features despite engineer talent shortages. Programming copilots alleviate bottlenecks while managing technical debt. And again, this represents greenfield opportunity — no vendor provides a unified AI-powered suite.
The AI copilot idea tailored to any of these dev personas has unicorn potential over the next decade.
SaaS Idea #5: The AI Copilot for CFOs
Never underestimate the money people! While CFOs may not make the flashiest tech purchases, they control purse strings and crave tools that boost efficiency.
Today’s patchwork of accounting systems fails to meet expectations. CFOs want insight into financial performance in real-time so they can guide strategic decisions. An AI copilot makes this achievable.
SMB Accountant — small business owners need help automating payables, receivables, compliance, and reporting. Basic bookkeeping today is still painfully manual.
Mid-Market Controller — as companies scale, analysts need help managing budgets, audits, FP&A and more. AI improves productivity.
Enterprise CFO — the Fortune 500 needs AI assistants that transform raw financial data into actionable insights. Models can also enhance fraud detection.
The makers of Excel and QuickBooks dominate the space but have not built true AI-enabled platforms. There is white space for new entrants. The CFO copilot opportunity represents one of the biggest SaaS ideas of the next decade.
SaaS Idea #6: The AI Copilot for GCs and CSOs
In the big data era, general counsels and chief security officers have growing responsibility to ensure regulatory compliance and mitigate cyber risk. AI copilots that automate audits, policies, and threat detection will be game changers.
While undervalued, the opportunity is analogous to those outlined above:
SMB Legal — small firms need AI assistance navigating basic contracts, IP, and employment law issues. Self-service replaces high-priced attorneys.
Mid-Market GCs — growing companies have more complex regulatory needs but less budget than Fortune 500. AI copilots provide leverage.
Enterprise Legal — massive organizations need AI systems for intelligent discovery, litigation prediction, compliance automation and more.
Cybersecurity represents another facet of this market. All companies want AI-enhanced tools to fortify defenses. SaaS vendors have solutions but no unified legal + security AI copilot exists.
The addressable market here may seem narrower at first glance but don’t be fooled — information protection sits at the intersection of technology, law, and business. The companies that capitalize on this opportunity have billion dollar potential.
SaaS Idea #7: The AI Copilot for Chief HR Officers
Last but not least, chief human resources officers will benefit tremendously from AI support. Even if HR budgets lag other departments, the market size remains substantial.
Again, the opportunity takes different forms across customer segments:
SMBs — founders need AI assistance with basic hiring, onboarding, and people management tasks. The goal is to remove time-consuming administrative burdens.
Mid-Market Companies — tighter teams require tailored features like candidate screening, skills gap analysis, and employee engagement monitoring.
Enterprise HR — AI enhances every aspect of talent management across the employee lifecycle — recruiting, development, retention, comp modeling, and more.
Core HR platforms have been around since the early days of enterprise software but they are ripe for reinvention with AI capabilities woven throughout. The shift from process automation to predictive insights unlocks transformative potential.
Startups have a window to compete directly against legacy vendors. The AI copilot for HR leaders represents a tantalizing greenfield opportunity.
Time To Execute On The AI-Powered SaaS Revolution
And there you have it — a framework for identifying the 7 most promising SaaS ideas poised to thrive in the AI era based on historical precedent and marketplace dynamics.
It’s impossible to predict exactly who the winners will be, but the candidates with the best odds play to the biggest budgets — the elusive chief level executive roles.
To be clear, companies can succeed with AI solutions targeting other personas like engineers, marketers, sales reps, support agents, etc. I think the copilot trend will be pervasive.
But if you want to swing for the fences and build a SaaS behemoth, the biggest ideas start at the top serving CEOs, CMOs and other leaders.
My goal was to present an informed perspective on key trends, not industry gospel. I don’t pretend to have a crystal ball, but I hope these insights provide a strategic foundation as you map plans for the decade ahead.
