In a world full of unexpected events, have you ever wondered if you are truly prepared to face an emergency? Accidents can happen at any time and anywhere, and it is crucial to have basic first aid knowledge to be able to act quickly and effectively when it is needed most.

Imagine this situation: you are enjoying a sunny day at the park when suddenly, a child trips and falls, breaking his arm. Would you know what to do at that moment? Or would you be paralyzed by panic and uncertainty?

Don't worry, we are here to help you! Let's immerse ourselves in the fascinating world of first aid and discover together the basic skills that we should all know.

What Should You Know?

CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation):

  • CPR is a crucial first aid technique in cardiac arrest situations, where the heart suddenly stops beating. It consists of a combination of chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth breathing.
  • To perform CPR, first check to see if the person is conscious and breathing. If she is unresponsive and not breathing normally, place her on her back on a firm surface and begin chest compressions. Locate the midpoint of the chest and place the heel of one hand on top, intertwining the fingers of the other hand and pressing with force and a constant rhythm at least 100 times per minute.
  • After each set of compressions, tilt the person's head back and lift the person's chin, seal their nose with your fingers, and blow air into their mouth to provide artificial respiration. Repeat this cycle until medical help arrives or the person begins to breathe on their own.

Bleeding Control:

  • Hemorrhage control is essential to stop bleeding from open wounds and prevent excessive blood loss. In case of bleeding, follow these steps:
  • Apply direct pressure to the wound with a clean cloth or bandage.
  • Elevates the affected limb above the level of the heart to reduce blood flow to the wound.
  • If bleeding persists, consider using a tourniquet as a last resort. Place it about 5cm above the wound and adjust the pressure until the bleeding stops. Mark the time the tourniquet was applied and communicate this information to emergency services.

Management of Fractures and Dislocations:

  • If a fracture or dislocation is suspected, it is important to immobilize the affected limb to prevent further damage and reduce pain. Follow these steps:
  • Place a makeshift splint around the injured area. You can use objects such as boards, sticks or newspapers.
  • Wrap the splint and limb with bandages or cloths to secure it in place.
  • If there is obvious deformity or the person experiences severe pain, avoid moving the limb and seek medical help immediately.

Psychological First Aid:

  • Psychological first aid focuses on providing emotional support to people who have experienced trauma or emotional crises. Some techniques include:
  • Active listening: Offer your full attention to the affected person, allowing them to express their feelings and experiences without interruptions.
  • Validate feelings: Recognize and validate the emotions the person is experiencing, demonstrating empathy and understanding.
  • Provide comfort: Offer words of encouragement and support, reassuring the person that they are not alone and that they can recover from the trauma with time and proper support.

If you witness an accident or are involved in one, it is important to act quickly and efficiently. Here is a basic guide of the steps you should follow:

Evaluate the situation:

Before you do anything, stop for a moment and evaluate the situation. Make sure the area is safe for you and the injured person. If there is a danger of fire, explosion or other hazards, remove the person to a safe place if possible.

Call emergency services:

Dial your country's emergency number (such as 911 in the United States, 112 in several European countries, or 100 in India) to request medical help. Provides the exact location of the accident and describes the situation clearly and calmly. Indicate the number of people involved and the severity of injuries, if possible.
Provides basic first aid:

If you are trained in first aid and the situation allows it, provide basic medical assistance to the injured person. This may include controlling bleeding, performing CPR if necessary, or immobilizing fractures or dislocations.
Stay calm and provide emotional support:

Calm is essential in emergency situations. Try to stay calm to be able to make effective decisions and convey peace of mind to the injured person. Offer words of encouragement and emotional support while they wait for medical help to arrive.
Collaborate with emergency services:

When emergency services arrive, work with them by providing accurate information about what happened and any assistance you have provided. Follow the instructions of medical personnel and evacuate the area if necessary.
Provide relevant information:

If you witness the accident but are not directly involved, offer your testimony to the relevant authorities when requested. Provide accurate and detailed information about what you saw or heard, but avoid speculating about the causes of the accident.

First aid is a vital skill that we should all possess. It is not just about saving lives, but also about providing comfort and support in times of crisis. So what are you waiting for? Start learning today and become a hero in your community.
