DeGoogle Your Life: Mobile Phone Options
We’re going to start showing you options for how you can step away from the big G
It’s fair to say that 2025 kicked off a year like no other. While exchanges of power were commonplace at this point, one of the things that did start to suffer from even more creep, was the level at which larger corporations involve themselves in our lives and by extension, our privacy.
While the concept of privacy is outside the scope of this article, today the plan is to give you some clear options around de-googling your life and taking your privacy back.
If you’re an Apple user, this article is not for you. If you’re a Droid user though, you should definitely read until the end.
De What?!
It’s worth considering exactly what De-Googling means for a moment. Because, if you’re like most people, you’ll probably find that actually taking that step takes some serious effort.
This is because companies like Google & Apple spend plenty of money locking you into their ecosystem. When you think back to how things were before Android, Gmail & Google, things were a lot more fractured in the sense that we would mostly use different providers for different things.
Unfortunately, the convenience of using an all-in-one provider makes it very difficult to break free of the ecosystem once you’re established there.
We did say difficult though, but not impossible. Because let's face it, if it was impossible, you wouldn’t be sitting here reading this article.
So with that said, let’s look at how this might work, as well as some of the options available to us.
What To Do
Due to the way Android devices work, any approach that aims to de-google your life must be all-encompassing.
So it’s fair to say that we’ll need new email providers as well as a completely new operating system for our phones.
We’ll also need the ability to download a ROM as well as the skills to flash it to our chosen device.
And we’ll want to ensure there’s a way to load open-source apps onto our device.
So as you’d imagine there’s more than a little bit of work there in terms of getting things set up. The good news is though, that there’s plenty of easy-to-understand information that covers the trouble-free setting up of such a device.
And, if you get stuck simply reach out via email or leave a comment, in the open-source world, help is never far away.
The Options
Graphene OS
GrapheneOS is an open-source, privacy-focused mobile operating system built for security-conscious users. Based on Android, it’s designed to enhance user control and protect against vulnerabilities by implementing hardened security features, such as strengthened memory management and reduced attack surfaces.
It avoids reliance on Google services by default, offering alternatives like sandboxed app environments. The project, led by a small team of developers, prioritizes transparency and regular updates, making it a popular choice for those seeking an alternative to mainstream operating systems without sacrificing functionality
LineageOS
LineageOS is one of the most popular custom Android ROMs, forked from the older CyanogenMod project. It’s open-source and doesn’t include Google apps by default, giving users the freedom to avoid Google’s ecosystem.
While it’s not as security-hardened as GrapheneOS, it supports a much wider variety of devices and is highly customizable, making it a versatile option for privacy-conscious users willing to tweak settings themselves.
CalyxOS
CalyxOS is another privacy-focused Android distribution that prioritizes ease of use alongside security. It’s designed to work without Google services by default but offers optional microG support for apps that rely on Google Play Services. This may be helpful if you have essential software that can’t be loaded via something like Fdroid.
Like GrapheneOS, it’s primarily compatible with Pixel devices, though it supports a slightly broader range of models. It includes pre-installed privacy tools like Signal and the Tor Browser, making it approachable for less technical users while still offering solid protection.
Pro’s & Cons
The concept of taking back your privacy has an alluring pull for those who like to know where their information goes, as well as the procedures for safely storing data but despite this, for most people, it remains a significant challenge.
One of the reasons that Apple and Google have been able to inject themselves so heavily into our lives is by providing essential products that for the most part “just work”. This makes life easier for those who might not feel comfortable experimenting with alternatives.
So, de-Googling our lives means that essentially, we walk away from this convenience in one go. It’s a big ask, so knowing how to get things going quickly and easily plays a huge part in making the process smooth and issue-free.
The end goal will be to step away from Google services entirely.
In future articles, we’ll be looking a little closer at quick and easy ways to start backing away from those types of services, making the transition to reclaiming your privacy an easy-to-follow, step-by-step process. We’ll also explore how to look at open-source alternatives to the Play Store so you can download apps to make your device more user-friendly.
Close
There’s no denying that sometimes the concept of privacy can be a difficult beast to master. And this doesn't even touch on the hypocrisy that you’ll get from the nothing to hide, nothing to fear crowd.
The reality for most people is though, that the privacy we once had has been significantly eroded as the scope tends to creep further and further from where it started under the guise of national security and anti-terrorism prevention.
For the most part, societies actually need functional encryption to work correctly. While our leaders would tell you that it’s “just criminals” that require and use that type of security the fact is, that it is everywhere.
Your medical files are protected by encryption, as is everything linked to your fiat bank account. For every second of every day, there’s a heavy reliance on the encrypted services that make our modern lives “just work”.
Privacy has always been important, but in today's modern world where things can change in an instant, it’s more important than ever.
