Health Care Coming with Technology 2: Mobil Health Applications
In my previous article, I shared information with you about the importance of digital health. Today, I am here to share with you my knowledge about "Mobile Health Applications", which are one of the subtypes of digital health and can be used for diagnosis, evaluation and treatment purposes, whose popularity has increased with the increase in the use of phones.

Mobile Health (m-Health)
WHO defines mobile health as supporting health interventions with technologies such as mobile phones, patient tracking tools, and individual digital assistants. According to the National Institutes of Health Foundation, mobile health is the delivery of healthcare services through mobile communications devices . Smartphones, tablets, web pages, message services and all wireless portable electronic devices can be used in the provision of health services within the scope of mobile health. Mobile Health is the broadest spectrum of networking, mobile computing, medical sensors and other communication technologies in the healthcare field (Martínez-Pérez et al., 2013).
Mobile Health Applications
Mobile health applications, defined as "the biggest technological breakthrough of our time", have an important place in our daily lives. Mobile health applications are rapidly expanding as a unique source of health information and tools to manage one's own health. These applications are healthcare-related software applications that provide the tools, processes, and communications that support electronic health applications. Applications are small and specialized programs that are downloaded to mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones. These applications, which are used in many areas from weather forecasts to recipes, have begun to be integrated into healthcare services . Smart health applications, which have become personal assistants for individual health monitoring and health promotion, are used effectively in all areas of health. Mobile health applications mean active computer use for patients, access to new information sources, social communication, data processing and health recommendations brought to daily life 24/7. With the spread of information capacity and technologies of mobile health applications, the health awareness of patients increases and the workload of caregivers decreases (Yasini & Marchand, 2015).
The provision of healthcare services via mobile devices was first defined as unwired e- med in 2000 , the concept of Mhealth began to be used after 2003. The real awareness of mobile health in societies occurred in 2007, when Apple introduced smartphones to the world. There are more than 40,000 health apps in the Apple store in the US alone . 38% of these are used for fitness - nutrition, 21% for health monitoring, 13% for Wellness , 6% for medical education and 2% for warning and diagnosis purposes. Considering the pace of M-Health development, patient self-management-learning, health monitoring and mutual patient- clinician interaction It is expected to provide a comprehensive infrastructure to support communication with.
The Android mobile operating system developed by Google is the world's most used and best-selling smartphone operating system, on smartphones since 2011 and on tablets since 2013, and is compatible with many mobile phones. Android is an open source operating system for smartphones, touch tablets, smartphones and mobile devices based on the Linux kernel, where applications run within an application framework that controls activities supported by libraries, and a virtual machine that compiles, transforms and collects all Java classes into a single file. Throughout the history of medicine, physicians have adapted to technological and scientific developments by integrating their knowledge and skills into practice to provide health or medical services . These services are defined broadly, covering general health, well-being, fitness and the diagnosis, management and support of individuals' health problems (CİSSÉ & YILMAZ, 2022) .
In recent years, many mobile health applications have been developed in this field. This allows the elderly to regularly monitor their vital parameters (blood pressure, weight, pulse, etc.) and also monitor their general health status. According to research, approximately 95% of people in the United States were using mobile phones in 2018. Additionally, more than two-thirds of the elderly population living in America own a smartphone, and approximately 20% rely on their mobile device for internet connection. According to Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) data as of August 25, 2020, internet usage of people aged 16-74 was 75.3% in 2019 and 79.0% in 2020 (CİSSÉ & YILMAZ, 2022) .
Benefits of Mobile Health Applications
Some benefits expected to be obtained as a result of the use of mobile health applications are as follows (Patrick et al., 2008) :
- The availability of mobile health applications in health institutions is ensured.
- The efficiency of the healthcare professional using technology is increased.
- The satisfaction level of patients and their relatives is increased.
- Health knowledge levels of patients and their relatives are increased.
- By adding a reimbursement section to the service provided, the costs of health services can be reduced and financing can be provided.
Mobile Health Features
· Collectively it is comprehensive
· Mutual privilege: No application falls into more than one category within a dimension.
· Usability and benefit
· Inclusive . It should contain enough dimensions and categories to be interesting.
· Comprehensive . It should ensure classification of all existing applications.
· It should be extensible
· It should be personalized : adapted to the individual's unique needs
· Evaluate and inform
· Context sensitivity
· Accessibility (Olla & Shimskey, 2015)
Mobile Applications in Rehabilitation
As a result, during the rehabilitation process, mobile devices can be used for clinical evaluation purposes such as goniometers , inclinometers , pedometers, pulse meters, etc., with the help of the sensors they contain and applications downloaded from the markets . They can perform the functions of similar devices. Developed mobile applications can record individuals' compliance with exercise programs and vital signs during exercises. It is possible to organize exercise programs by reviewing these records by clinicians . This can extend the time intervals between which patients need to be seen in the clinic and thus save both time and expenses .
Nowadays, among the increasing number of mobile applications, there is information and visual videos on how to do some exercises, as well as exercise programs that need to be planned individually, in the form of templates. In addition, mobile applications and smart devices, which have found a place in many parts of our daily lives with the developing technology , are used not to break the communication between clinicians and patients, but also to better and regular follow-up of individuals during the rehabilitation process, to improve health services and to educate individuals on subjects such as disease, treatment and rehabilitation. It should be used to ensure.
