Are you drinking enough water each day?
Staying properly hydrated is essential for maintaining optimal health
Drinking enough water has a ton of health benefits, such as supporting physical performance, preventing headaches, constipation and more. The human body is composed of approximately 60% water, highlighting the importance of hydration.
Such a basic necessity in our day to day lives but it always surprises me how many people do not drink water or do not drink enough. Especially nowadays as our supermarkets are full of toxic food and drinks.
While the widely recommended guideline of consuming eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day lacks scientific evidence, staying hydrated remains crucial.
Here are some evidence-based health advantages associated with drinking plenty of water:
Drinking enough water enhances physical performance
Failing to stay hydrated can significantly hinder physical performance, especially during intense exercise or in high temperatures. Even a mere 2% loss of body water content can lead to altered body temperature control, reduced motivation, increased fatigue, and difficulty during exercise. Optimal hydration can prevent these issues and may even reduce oxidative stress experienced during high-intensity workouts.
As temperatures around the world are rising and our summers are becoming hotter than ever, it is even more essential we drink enough water.
Drinking enough water affects energy levels and brain function
Hydration status strongly influences brain function. Even mild dehydration, such as a 1-3% loss of body weight, can impair various aspects of cognitive performance. Studies have shown that fluid loss after exercise negatively impacts mood, concentration, working memory, and increases feelings of anxiety and fatigue. Mild dehydration can occur through regular daily activities, making it crucial to maintain proper hydration for optimal brain function.
With this in mind it is extremely important we encourage our children to drink water instead of sugary drinks so they can perform to the best of their abilities at school, university and later the workplace.
Drinking enough water assists in headache prevention and treatment
Dehydration can trigger headaches and migraines in some individuals. Drinking water has been shown to relieve headaches in those who experience frequent episodes. Research has demonstrated that increased water intake resulted in significant improvements in migraine symptoms and overall quality of life. However, further high-quality studies are needed to confirm the effectiveness of hydration in headache management.
This is my go-to reply to anyone in my family the second that they say they have a headache! 'drink water' and you know what, sometimes it is that simple!
Drinking enough water alleviates constipation
Adequate fluid intake is often recommended for treating constipation, as low water consumption is a risk factor for this common problem. Increasing hydration can help decrease constipation, and mineral water rich in magnesium and sodium has shown particular benefits in improving bowel movement frequency and consistency.
Hard poops are uncomfortable, everything just works better when we are properly hydrated.
Drinking enough water aids in kidney stone prevention
Higher fluid intake, through increased urine volume, reduces the concentration of minerals in the kidneys, lowering the risk of crystal formation and the subsequent development of kidney stones. While more research is necessary to fully confirm this effect, water intake appears to decrease the likelihood of kidney stone recurrence.
Drinking enough water helps prevent hangovers
Dehydration plays a role in the unpleasant symptoms experienced after consuming alcoholic beverages. Of course not drinking alcohol is the best way to avoid a hangover! But by drinking water between drinks and before going to bed, you can reduce the severity of hangover symptoms such as thirst, fatigue, headache, and dry mouth.
Of course the best hangover prevention is to drink only water!
Drinking enough water supports weight loss
Drinking plenty of water can aid in weight loss by increasing satiety and boosting metabolism. Evidence suggests that increased water intake slightly elevates metabolism, leading to a higher calorie burn rate. Consuming water before meals has been shown to reduce calorie intake and promote weight loss.
To sum up, even mild dehydration from not drinking enough water can have detrimental effects on both mental and physical well-being. Therefore, it is essential to prioritise proper hydration by ensuring an adequate daily water intake, regardless of specific quantity goals. Ultimately, staying hydrated is one of the best things you can do to support your overall health.
