Tips for Emerging NFT Artists
With the recent surge in new users & NFT artists I thought it might be helpful to share some of the tips I've learned since becoming a creator.
Tip #1.) Many new NFT creators just getting started typically get frustrated that they aren't selling any artwork after awhile. The first piece of advice I can give is to go into creating artwork with the mindset you might never make any $. If you can accept this then you'll enjoy creating your artwork more & most likely showcase more creativity. If it's something you enjoy, this won't bother you, art wasn't intended to be a job.
Tip #2.) Which leads us to tip #2 and I cannot stress this one enough. So you've been making artwork and haven't sold any artwork, you're thinking about exploring avenues to try and bring in buyers so you think maybe I'll just give a few out for free or create an NFT as a gift. The classic, RT & follow for a free NFT or some coin is the most commonly used approach to building a fan base. In my honest opinion this is the wrong approach. If you want people to value your work & time DO NOT give it away for free. The common argument here is that it actually does create some buzz, & the artist feels they are getting some recognition. This is the wrong kind of recognition. For example if I have cheese & I'm selling it for $25 because it's great cheese, but no one is buying, does it seem smart to give the cheese away for free? No you have to explain to them why the cheese is worth $25 or you go home with no $ and no cheese. When you start giving out free stuff there will always be a hand waiting to grab it. The hype is commonly short lived & when you stop giving out free money the "community" disappears. They will sell your NFTs for practically nothing...because it's still profit if they got it for free. No artist wants to start their career with a sinking floor, especially if they work hard & value their art. As the artist your goal is to create quality work & in volume. The key is creating volume.
Tip #3.) Now tip #3 is about building your community organically. This is where all the work involved in being an artist comes in to play. Everyone has to develop their own community & build it if they want genuine fans. This means communication with people who have similar interests & you have to find them. You can't be focusing on sales at this point in time either or you will come off as a shill, you need actually create meaningful engagement. Just liking & following will not build you an engaged community. This is the hard part for every artist to figure out but without the work & effort, you can't expect to have a loyal community that will support what you're creating. If you want to create value the focus has to be long term with a vision in mind. Whatever you're interested in there are bound to be others so set realistic goes and be persistent in following them. Consistency is key.
Tip 4.) Don't over promise. I personally don't create roadmaps. Anything can happen throughout the course of your career so you want to be able to remain flexible, biting off more than you can chew will end you if you create a level of success. Only promise your fans something when you already have the funding and can start using the product. Time & time again I've seen good projects lose their following by releasing this great sounding roadmap only to leave their fans holding worthless NFTs when they couldn't follow through. If they value you, and they like the art, you don't need to sugar coat your plans and set them in stone. They will have bought it because it satisfied them in some way as opposed to buying it only to receive a form of utility or profit. Good artwork sells to the right buyer.
Tip 5.) Be as transparent with your community as possible. They are putting their $ on you so you need to respect the fact that it's comforting for your base to know what it's being used for & keeping them updated when you make mistakes. There are a lot of scammers out there so you need to socially proof yourself & do right by your customers & base of support if you plan to create value long term.
I'm sure there is plenty more to discuss but I will save it for another blog entry lol. I hope this helps some of the newbies emerging into the world of NFTs trying to make a name for themselves. ✌️ I'm going to drop my affiliate links below anyone seeking a new opportunity.
