The next huge challenge for AI is to create good jokes!
Why is AI so terrible at creating good jokes?
AI has come a long way in recent years, but there are still some areas where it falls short. One of these is in the area of humor. Specifically, AI struggles with understanding context and irony, two important elements of jokes. This is likely because jokes often rely on cultural references and shared experiences that are difficult to replicate with artificial intelligence. Even when AI does manage to create a joke, it often falls flat due to a lack of understanding of what makes people laugh. In other words, AI isn't quite there yet when it comes to creating good jokes. However, it's possible that as AI continues to evolve, it will eventually be able to crack the code of humor. Until then, we'll just have to keep enjoying the bad jokes that AI produces.
To really make someone laugh, you need to know what they find funny and be able to deliver the joke in a way that is both appropriate and entertaining. Unfortunately, AI is still pretty bad at understanding human psychology, which is why most of its jokes fall flat.
AI jokes = bad AI jokes?
DeepMind managed to crack Go, Chess, and protein folding. Why are not focused on making people laugh more? Since we all know laughing is very healthy and makes lives better.
One company that is devoted to making people laugh more is Second City, a comedy club based in Chicago. Since its founding in 1959, Second City has been a training ground for some of the biggest names in comedy, including Bill Murray, Tina Fey, and Steve Carell. Today, the club offers classes and workshops for aspiring comedians, as well as stage shows and corporate events. While DeepMind may be able to crack Go, Chess, and protein folding, there's still no AI that can match the hilarity of a live stand-up set. So for now at least, it looks like Second City will continue to reign supreme when it comes to making people laugh.
And now the weird answer …
At first glance, it might seem like DeepMind, the London-based artificial intelligence company, is focused on cracking some of the world's most challenging problems. After all, they're responsible for creating algorithms that can defeat Go grandmasters and calculate the 3D shape of proteins. However, upon closer inspection, it becomes apparent that DeepMind is also interested in making people laugh more. As it turns out, laughter is very healthy and has been shown to improve moods, lower stress levels, and boost immunity. In other words, laughing makes lives better. And DeepMind is in a unique position to use its AI technology to create more opportunities for laughter in the world. For example, they could develop a comedic chatbot that tells jokes or creates funny videos. Alternatively, they could create a mobile app that uses machine learning to generate personalized cartoon characters that make users chuckle. Whatever form it takes, DeepMind's (hopefully future) goal of making people laugh more is admirable and sure to have a positive impact on the world.
