SARS-CoV-2 is a virulent coronavirus that is responsible for the current COVID-19 pandemic. It is part of a large family of enveloped, single-stranded RNA viruses that also includes the coronaviruses SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV, which were responsible for the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) outbreaks that occurred in 2003 and 2012, respectively. The emergence of three different global coronavirus outbreaks within the past 20 years has reinforced the need for increased development of anti-viral therapeutics.

However, one limitation of COVID-19 drug development has been a lack of suitable animal models. SARS-CoV-2 can only infect cells through binding to the human ACE2 (hACE2) receptor. Many current models that express hACE2 have critical drawbacks including high mortality rates. Envigo has developed multiple COVID-19 animal models that express physiological levels of the human ACE2 and/or Tmprss2 protein with no expression of the respective rodent protein, allowing for improved translational research of COVID-19 pathology and treatment, particularly long COVID. Additionally, our COVID-19 model portfolio includes two unique offerings, a hACE2 knockin rat and a hACE2/hTmprss2 double knockin mouse, for an expanded in vivo platform for testing newly developed therapeutics.
