1970 WORLD CUP


The 1970 FIFA World Cup was held in Mexico between 31 May and 21 June.



This tournament marked Brazil's third World Cup win, becoming the first country to achieve this feat. This tournament also became the first World Cup in which matches were broadcast on color television. The 1970 FIFA World Cup was played in a format in which 16 teams competed in four groups. Here are the groups and their results:

Group 1: Mexico-Soviet Union-Belgium-El Salvador. In this group, host Mexico and the Soviet Union took the first two places and advanced to the quarter-finals. Mexico collected 5 points and the Soviet Union collected 4 points.

Group 2: Italy-Uruguay-Sweden-Israel. In this group, Italy and Uruguay earned the right to advance to the quarter-finals. Italy finished the group as leader with 6 points, while Uruguay came in second with 4 points.

Group 3: England-Brazil-Romania-Czechoslovakia. In this group, Brazil and England advanced to the quarter-finals. Brazil finished the group as leader with 6 points, while England came second with 4 points.

Group 4: West Germany-Peru-Bulgaria-Morocco. In this group, West Germany and Peru qualified for the quarter-finals. West Germany finished the group as leader with 6 points, while Peru came second with 4 points.

Each group was played in a double round format, with each team playing one match against the other three teams in its group. Each win was worth 2 points, each draw was worth 1 point, and each defeat was worth 0 points. The top two teams in their groups advanced to the quarter-finals. In the quarter-finals, Mexico defeated the Soviet Union 1-0, Italy defeated Uruguay 4-0, Brazil defeated England 1-0 and West Germany defeated Peru 3-1 and advanced to the semi-finals.

In the semi-finals, Italy defeated West Germany 4-3 and Brazil defeated Uruguay 3-1 and advanced to the final. The final match was played at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City on June 21, 1970, and Brazil defeated Italy 4-1 to become champions. This match is considered one of Brazil's best performances in football history. While Brazil's goals were scored by Pele, Gerson, Jairzinho and Carlos Alberto, Italy's only goal was scored by Boninsegna.

The 1970 World Cup is considered the pinnacle of Brazil's "Samba Football". The Brazilian team, full of players such as Pele, Jairzinho, Gerson, Rivelino and Carlos Alberto, were the highest scoring team of the tournament and are considered one of the best teams in football history for their performance in the final.

This tournament is also remembered for Italy's 4–3 semi-final victory over West Germany, dubbed the "Match of the Century". This match is considered one of the most exciting and dramatic matches in football history. In addition, this is the tournament in which Gerd Müller was the top scorer and Pele scored 4 goals in the tournament and became the first player in history to score in three World Cups with his goal in the final.

1974 WORLD CUP


The 1974 FIFA World Cup was held in West Germany between 13 June and 7 July. This tournament was won by West Germany as hosts and introduced the Netherlands' concept of "Total Football" to the whole world.


The tournament was played with a format in which 16 teams competed in four groups and the top two teams from each group advanced to the quarter-finals. However, in this tournament, the quarter-final stage was abolished and a second group stage was organized after the group stage. In this second group stage, each group winner qualified to play in the final.

This tournament was played in a format with 16 teams competing in four groups, with the top two teams from each group advancing to take part in the second round. First Round Groups:

Group 1: West Germany, Chile, East Germany, Australia
Group 2: Brazil, Yugoslavia, Scotland, Zaire
Group 3: Netherlands, Sweden, Bulgaria, Uruguay
Group 4: Poland, Argentina, Italy, Haiti

At the end of the first round, West Germany and East Germany were promoted from Group 1, Brazil and Yugoslavia from Group 2, the Netherlands and Sweden from Group 3, and Poland and Argentina from Group 4. Second Round Groups:

Group A: West Germany, Poland, Sweden, Yugoslavia
Group B: Netherlands, Brazil, East Germany, Argentina.

In the second round, two teams competed in each group and the winner of each group advanced to play in the final. At this stage, West Germany advanced to the final from Group A and the Netherlands from Group B. The final match was played at the Olympic Stadium in Munich on July 7, 1974, and West Germany defeated the Netherlands 2-1 to become champions. The Netherlands took the lead with a penalty goal from Johan Neeskens, but West Germany turned the game around with goals from Paul Breitner and Gerd Müller.

The 1974 World Cup is remembered for the Netherlands' "Total Football" approach. The Dutch team, full of players such as Johan Cruyff, Johan Neeskens, Rob Rensenbrink, won the admiration of the whole world with its play in the tournament. This tournament is also remembered as the home win by West Germany, with Gerd Müller as top scorer. Müller scored 4 goals in the tournament and secured West Germany's championship with his goal in the final.

In addition, this tournament is the first tournament in which Zaire participated and the first tournament in which an African country took part in the World Cup. Although Zaire did not score any points in the tournament, this participation was an important milestone for African football.

1974 WORLD CUP FINAL

The 1978 FIFA World Cup was held in Argentina between 1 June and 25 June. This tournament was won by Argentina as hosts and the Netherlands played in the final for the second time in a row.


The tournament was played with a format in which 16 teams competed in four groups and the top two teams from each group advanced to the quarter-finals. However, in this tournament, the quarter-final stage was abolished and a second group stage was organized after the group stage. In this second group stage, each group winner qualified to play in the final. The group stages of the 1978 World Cup were as follows:

First Round:

Group 1: Italy, France, Hungary and host Argentina. Argentina and Italy finished this group in the top two places.

Group 2: Poland, West Germany, Mexico and Tunisia. Poland and West Germany finished this group in the top two places.

Group 3: Austria, Spain, Sweden and Brazil. Brazil and Austria finished this group in the top two places.

Group 4: Netherlands, Scotland, Iran and Peru. The Netherlands and Scotland finished in the top two places in this group.

Second Round (instead of Quarter Final):

Group A: Poland, Argentina, Brazil and Italy. Argentina finished this group as leader.

Group B: Netherlands, West Germany, Italy and Austria. The Netherlands finished this group as leader.

At the end of these group stages, Argentina and the Netherlands, the leaders of both groups, faced each other in the final held on 25 June 1978. The final match was played at the River Plate Stadium in Buenos Aires and Argentina defeated the Netherlands 3-1 to become champions. Mario Kempes stood out with two goals in this important victory for Argentina.

The 1978 World Cup is remembered as the tournament that Argentina won as a home team and Mario Kempes was the top scorer. Kempes scored 6 goals in the tournament and secured Argentina's championship with his goals in the final.

This tournament also marks the first time Iran and Tunisia participated, and the first time an African country won a match in the World Cup, with Tunisia winning a match. It was also the last time Scotland advanced through the group stage of the World Cup.

1978 WORLD CUP FINAL



1982 WORLD CUP


The 1982 FIFA World Cup was held in Spain between 13 June and 11 July. This was the tournament that Italy won for the third time and West Germany played in the final for the second time in a row.



The tournament was also the first World Cup to feature 24 teams, compared to 16 in previous tournaments. The format of the tournament started with a group stage with 24 teams competing in six groups. The top two teams from each group advanced to a second group stage. In this second group stage, four groups were formed and the top teams from each group advanced to the semi-finals. A total of 24 teams competed in the

1982 World Cup, forming six groups. Here are the groups and their results:

Group 1: Argentina-Belgium-El Salvador-Hungary. In this group, Belgium and Argentina took the first two places and advanced to the second round.

Group 2: Italy-Poland-Peru-Cameroon. In this group, Poland and Italy took the first two places and advanced to the second round.

Group 3: Germany-Austria-Algeria-Chile. In this group West Germany and Austria took the first two places and advanced to the second round.

Group 4: England-France-Czechoslovakia-Kuwait. In this group, England and France took the first two places and advanced to the second round.

Group 5: Scotland-New Zealand-Soviet Union-Brazil. In this group, Brazil and the Soviet Union took the first two places and advanced to the second round.

Group 6: Northern Ireland-Honduras Spain-Yugoslavia. In this group, Spain and Northern Ireland took the first two places and advanced to the second round.

In the second group stage, Italy and Poland formed Group A, West Germany and England formed Group B, France and Austria formed Group C, and Brazil and Argentina formed Group D. Italy, Poland, West Germany and France finished their groups as leaders and advanced to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, Italy defeated Poland 2-0, while West Germany drew 3-3 with France and won 5-4 on penalties.

The final match was played at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid on 11 July 1982, and Italy defeated West Germany 3-1 to become champions. Paolo Rossi stood out with a goal in this important victory for Italy. The 1982 World Cup is remembered as the tournament that Italy won for the third time and Paolo Rossi was the top scorer. Rossi scored 6 goals in the tournament and secured Italy's championship with his goal in the final.

This tournament was also a tournament in which Qatar, New Zealand and Kuwait participated for the first time. Additionally, this tournament was the last time England played in the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
