# The History of Omega Watches
Omega, a renowned Swiss luxury watchmaker, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1848 by Louis Brandt in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. Initially, the company operated as a small workshop where Brandt assembled precision pocket watches from parts sourced from local craftsmen.
In 1894, Omega revolutionized watchmaking with the introduction of the Omega 19-line caliber, which set new standards for accuracy and reliability. This innovation earned Omega numerous awards at international exhibitions, solidifying its reputation as a leading watch manufacturer.
During the early 20th century, Omega became synonymous with precision timekeeping, supplying watches to military units and prestigious sporting events such as the Olympics. In 1932, Omega became the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games, a partnership that continues to this day.
Omega's association with exploration and adventure began in 1936 when the brand supplied watches to the British Royal Flying Corps and the American Army Air Corps. These timepieces proved indispensable for aviators navigating over long distances.
The iconic Omega Speedmaster made history in 1969 when it became the first watch worn on the moon during NASA's Apollo 11 mission. This monumental achievement solidified the Speedmaster's status as the "Moonwatch" and cemented Omega's place in space exploration.
Throughout the latter half of the 20th century and into the 21st century, Omega continued to innovate, introducing groundbreaking technologies such as the Co-Axial escapement and antimagnetic movements. The brand also expanded its presence globally, with a strong emphasis on precision, craftsmanship, and design.
Today, Omega remains at the forefront of the watchmaking industry, combining heritage with innovation to produce timepieces coveted by collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.
