Trump worries US 'unlikely to survive' if President Biden is re-elected
Donald Trump worries about America's future if he loses the election, criticizing President Biden for his handling of the economy and immigration.
"If we don't win this election, I don't think our country can survive. I'm going to say something I've felt a long time ago, but I've never said publicly before," former President Donald Trump told supporters at a campaign event in Waukesha, Wisconsin on May 1.
Wisconsin is expected to be one of the battleground states to see a tense rematch between Trump and President Joe Biden in the November election. The Trump campaign said the former president was using campaign events to draw a stark contrast between his "peaceful, prosperous and secure first term and Biden's failed presidency."
Former President Trump criticized Biden's handling of the economy and immigration, arguing that the US president allowed the country to be "invaded" by migrants. He also accused his Democratic opponent of being too passive in the face of a wave of pro-Palestinian student protests at universities across the United States
Observers say Trump and his supporters are trying to get the message out that President Biden and Democrats are ruining the country because of border security mistakes and mismanagement of the economy.
At the event in Waukesha, Trump also repeated claims President Biden is behind the 88 charges he is facing. "I was prosecuted 4 times and faced civil trials. It's all coming from the White House," he said.
The former president has repeatedly said the prosecutions are part of a "witch hunt" aimed at thwarting his reelection bid, without citing evidence.
Donald Trump is the first former U.S. president to face criminal charges related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results and his handling of classified documents. Over the past two weeks, he has also attended hearings in the case of spending money to silence porn star Stormy Daniels, who was unfavorable to his 2016 campaign.
President Biden's campaign hasn't missed an opportunity to mock his Republican opponent for legal troubles. Biden said last month that Trump was "busy" in court, while the president's campaign called Trump "Sleepy Don" because multiple journalists in the courtroom said the former president fell asleep during the proceedings. The nickname is reportedly in response to the mocking "Sleepy Joe" Trump has long used for Biden.
