Arrival
The main character of the movie, Luis, is the best linguist in the country.
“Memory is a strange thing. It doesn't work at all the way I thought it would, what I remember consists of fragmentary moments, we are very dependent on time due to order. I'm not sure I believe in beginnings and endings anymore.” This legendary saying appears in the first scene of the movie.
The most important person in Luis' life is his daughter Hannah. When Hannah was born, she did not want to go to the nurse and her mother did not want to leave. His mother, Luis, said, "Come back to me." This is a saying that has a very deep meaning. Because his daughter, Hannah, got cancer when she grew up and died. While Luis is waiting for his daughter in the hospital, he says the same sentence again, "Come back to me."
While Luis goes to give a lecture at the university as usual, there is serious anxiety among the students at the school. Students talk about the news and say that 12 spaceships landed on Earth.
Spaceships just stand still. However, there is serious anxiety in the world and radical-minded people say that the world should be protected from them. However, there is no attack by any aliens. Of course, there are groups that believe they are peaceful and they have problems when they want to communicate, so Luis is called to the region.
While going to the region, they meet the character Eana, a physics expert. The solution of the language problem was entrusted to Luis, the solution of the physics problem was entrusted to Eana. As they move to the region together, Ean reads a sentence from Luis's academic paper: "Language is the basis of civilization, a kind of glue that holds people together, and also a kind of weapon during conflict."
Luis enters the spaceship with a blackboard and is able to communicate through symbols. The atmosphere on the ship and the length of working hours deteriorate Luis' mood. In these moments, he remembers his moments with his daughter. Over time, he begins to make sense of the aliens' spelling symbols. Afterwards, Ean states that these symbols do not have a planar structure but are circular. Symbols are circular, not flat, and their mental structures may also be that way.
Luis asks the aliens their purpose in coming here. The answer they received was that they wanted to offer weapons to humanity. This situation has created serious concern. Although Luis tried to explain those who may not have understood this situation correctly, he was unsuccessful.
Soldiers put a time bomb on the ship. However, when Luis and Ean came to the ship to ask what they meant by the weapon, they responded with a lot of symbols. Realizing that the bomb was going to explode, the aliens saved Luis and Ean. When Luis reaches the ship again to solve the crisis, the aliens tell Luis that they have a weapon, this weapon is their own language, and they say that this language gives Luis the ability to see into the future. The memories Luis sees are actually those of the future. Luis currently has no children.
While Luis was living in the past, she was remembering the future…
Time is not a horizontal line. If we think of time as a circle, it represents a never-ending cycle.
Luis' future husband and the father of his child is Ean. For this reason, they form a close bond. Luis' daughter's name, Hannah, is also a circle name. The beginning and the end are always pronounced as the same name.
While the states are preparing to attack the aliens, Luis has another memory, which dissuades the Chinese leader from the idea of war.
