CREATOR OF MAFIA MOVIES: Martin Scorsese
Martin Scorsese is an American film director, screenwriter and producer of Italian origin, born in New York in 1942. Scorsese, who is considered one of the most important and influential directors in the history of cinema, is especially known for his films dealing with themes such as Christianity, crime, justice and violence. Scorsese is also the owner of many prestigious awards such as the Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe and the American Film Institute Lifetime Achievement Award.
Scorsese's passion for cinema began when he was unable to participate in street plays due to asthma in his childhood. Scorsese, who was interested in cinema, entered the New York University Department of Cinema in 1960 and started making short films there. In 1967, he shot his first feature film, "Who's That Knocking at My Door". This film contained elements of what would later become Scorsese's signature style: New York Italian-American street life, flash editing, rock music, and troubled male characters.
In the 1970s, Scorsese, one of the important representatives of the American new wave movement, established close friendships with directors such as Francis Ford Coppola, Brian De Palma, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. During this period, Scorsese, who frequently worked with actors such as Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel, made cult films such as "Mean Streets", "Taxi Driver", "New York, New York" and "Raging Bull". "Taxi Driver" won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1976, and "Raging Bull" was nominated for an Oscar in 8 categories and won 2 awards in 1980.
During the 1980s, Scorsese continued to make films that were both commercially and critically successful. Scorsese, who experimented in different genres with films such as "The King of Comedy", "After Hours", "The Color of Money" and "The Last Temptation of Christ", received criticism towards the Christian faith, especially with "The Last Temptation of Christ". This movie was about the last days of Jesus and the imaginary scenes he experienced before his crucifixion. The film, banned in some countries, was nominated for an Oscar for best director in 1988.
In the 1990s, Scorsese continued to explore themes such as crime, mafia, violence and religion with films such as "Goodfellas", "Cape Fear", "Casino" and "Kundun". One of these films, "Goodfellas", was nominated for an Oscar in 6 categories in 1990 and won the best supporting actor award for Joe Pesci. "Casino" was nominated for an Oscar in 1995. During this period, Scorsese also directed Michael Jackson's "Bad" video.
In the 2000s, Scorsese began working with Leonardo DiCaprio and produced films such as "Gangs of New York", "The Aviator", "The Departed", "Shutter Island" and "The Wolf of Wall Street". One of these films, "The Aviator", was nominated for an Oscar in 11 categories in 2004 and received 5 awards. "The Departed" was nominated for an Oscar in 5 categories in 2006 and won 4 awards. This film is the film for which Scorsese won his first and only Oscar for Best Director.
In the 2010s, Scorsese met cinema audiences with films such as "Hugo", "Silence" and "The Irishman". "Hugo" was nominated for an Oscar in 11 categories in 2011 and received 5 awards. "Silence" was nominated for an Oscar in 2016. "The Irishman" was nominated for an Oscar in 10 categories in 2019, but did not receive any awards. During this period, Scorsese also made documentary films about the lives of musicians such as Bob Dylan, George Harrison, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles.
In the 2020s, Scorsese is working on his new movie called "Killers of the Flower Moon". This film will be about a series of murders in Oklahoma in the 1920s and will bring together actors such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Jesse Plemons.
Martin Scorsese has taken his place in the history of cinema as a director who is respected and taken as an example with his contributions to the art of cinema. Developing his unique cinematographic language, basic dramatic pursuits and characters, Scorsese has made films that are both commercially and critically successful. Scorsese also carried out important work on cinema education and preservation and contributed to the spread of cinema culture.
Finally, my opinion is that each of this man's films is legendary and reflects reality, mafia life is beautiful but always ends badly. He is a real director.
