Extreme heat threatens wildlife Monkey deaths increase
The deaths of “howler monkeys” in Mexico due to the extreme heat wave have reportedly spread to many states of the country.
Mexico's Ministry of Environment made a statement on the deaths of howler monkeys native to South and Central America.
According to the statement, the deaths, which were seen in the states of Chiapas and Tabasco, began to be seen in the states of Campeche and Veracruz. Tests showed that the monkeys died of heatstroke. It was pointed out that the current drought in the country and the lack of water supply in the areas where the monkeys live also played a role in the deaths.
Authorities stated that a mobile veterinary facility has been established as well as water supply for the monkeys.
No announcement was made regarding the current number of deaths, but it was last reported that 157 howler monkeys died last week.
In a zoo in the north of the country, it was reported that some animals, including parrots, died due to dehydration.
