Islam is one of the major world religions, with over a billion followers worldwide. It originated in the 7th century CE in the Arabian Peninsula with the Prophet Muhammad receiving revelations from God (Allah in Arabic) as recorded in the holy book of Islam, the Quran. Muslims believe that Muhammad is the final prophet in a line of prophets that includes figures such as Adam, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus.
The core beliefs of Islam are encapsulated in the Five Pillars of Islam, which are:

  1. Shahada (Declaration of Faith): The testimony that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger.
  2. Salat (Prayer): Muslims are required to perform ritual prayers five times a day facing the Kaaba in Mecca.
  3. Zakat (Charity): Muslims are obligated to give a portion of their wealth to those in need.
  4. Sawm (Fasting during the month of Ramadan): Muslims fast from dawn to sunset during the holy month of Ramadan.
  5. Hajj (Pilgrimage to Mecca): Muslims who are physically and financially able are required to undertake a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in their lifetime.

Islam also emphasizes the importance of moral and ethical behavior, justice, compassion, and community. The teachings of Islam are found not only in the Quran but also in the Hadith, which are collections of sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammad.
It's important to note that there is diversity within the Muslim community, with different interpretations and traditions, leading to various sects such as Sunni and Shia. Islam is not just a religious system but also encompasses various aspects of life, including social, legal, and ethical dimensions. Additionally, Muslims come from diverse cultures and backgrounds, contributing to the rich tapestry of the global Islamic community.
