A Battle with Patience: Finding Serenity in a Chaotic World

I often find myself as one of those individuals who are easily annoyed, with a short temper that sometimes leads to moments of complete frustration. Perhaps when God was bestowing patience upon the world, I was blissfully asleep!

Here are a few everyday triggers that drain my patience:

1.   Slow or No Internet Connection

This truly hampers my day-to-day tasks and there's really nothing I can do to improve the situation, especially since I live in a remote area far from the city. The most I can do is check the connection speed, turn my device off and on again, but these actions bear no fruit unless the network provider improves their service.

It's peculiar how the worst of the internet connection coincides precisely with working hours when I'm executing a work-from-home setup. My patience has its limits and, although I have tried to restrain myself, the occasional swear word escapes in anger.

Often, my frustration slips out through my inability to control my emotions, leading me to throw my phone or impulsively hit my laptop. Sometimes, I close my eyes momentarily, take a deep breath, or decide to take a break. However, when my tolerance teeters at its edge, these are the moments when bystanders bear witness to my ensuing tantrum, caused by the clamor of the items I throw against the floor or wall.

2.   Continuous Household Noise

Continuous noise within my house and intrusive noise from neighbors - repetitive, insignificant noises that continue to reoccur. I label these noises as nonsensical since they comprise repetitive lectures that neither induce any positive effects nor bring about any notable changes, as they are all words with no subsequent actions.

However, I am able to cope with this auditory annoyance by simply putting on headphones and drowning out the world with my favorite music.

3.   Misplaced Belongings

Another thing that ruffles my feathers and drains my patience is when my housemates use my belongings and do not return them back to their rightful places. I despise searching around the house, which is why I try to keep my things well-organized so they are within reach when needed, without being a nuisance to others or causing myself unnecessary stress.

4.  Constantly Correcting Behavior

I often feel my patience waning when I have to repeatedly point out behaviors I find inappropriate. While I see these actions as significant, others in my household may be indifferent, further testing my limits.

Effective advice for developing patience

If you are someone like me who tends to be short-tempered and quickly lose patience, the following recommendations may be helpful in managing our fleeting patience and preventing it from being continuously tested.

1.   Be kind to yourself

Recognize that feeling frustrated is human. Forgive yourself for moments of impatience instead of criticizing yourself. Engage in relaxation techniques and prioritize your basic needs (like sleep and nutrition) to reduce frustration.

2.   Acceptance of what we can’t control

Acceptance can lead to greater patience. When you accept what you can't change, you are less likely to react impulsively. Shift your attention from trying to control external factors to how you choose to respond to them. This empowers you to manage your reactions better.

3.   Remember what is most important to you.

Consider the bigger picture. Short-term irritations often fade, but the impact on your relationships and mental well-being can last longer.

4.   Develop a Meditation Practice

Regular meditation can reduce stress and anxiety, leading to a more relaxed state of mind, which can help you respond more patiently.

5.   Ensure you are getting adequate sleep and nutrition

A well-rested and well-nourished body is better equipped to handle stress, leading to a calmer demeanor and a more patient approach to life.

6.   Create a standard calming routine for those moments of impatience.

Physical Relaxation: Incorporating deep breathing, stretching, or mindfulness into your routine can physically relax your body, reducing tension and promoting a sense of calm.

Mental Reset: Engaging in a standard routine gives your mind a break, helping you shift focus away from frustration and towards a more positive outlook.

You've come this far. May the divine grace be upon you.
