Additionally, James has been named to the All-Defensive Team six times and was twice a runner-up for the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award during his career.

One of the notable aspects of LeBron James' career is his remarkable longevity. As of January 2024, he holds the distinction of being the oldest player actively competing in the NBA.

LeBron James's basketball journey began at St. Vincent–St. Mary High School in his hometown of Akron, Ohio. Even during his high school years, he garnered significant attention from national media as a prospective NBA superstar, thanks to his versatile skills in scoring, passing, athleticism, and playmaking abilities. Opting to transition from high school to the professional ranks, James was selected as the first overall pick in the 2003 NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

James quickly lived up to the high expectations, earning the title of the 2004 NBA Rookie of the Year. He solidified his status as one of the league's premier players, guiding the Cavaliers to their first NBA Finals appearance in 2007 and securing the NBA MVP award in 2009 and 2010. Despite these achievements, the quest for a championship with Cleveland proved elusive.

In 2010, LeBron James made a high-profile move as a free agent, departing from the Cleveland Cavaliers to join the Miami Heat. The announcement of this decision was famously made through a nationally televised special called The Decision, marking one of the most controversial free agency moves in the history of sports.

Basketball

During his freshman year, standing at 6 feet 2 inches 1.88 metres, LeBron James showcased his exceptional basketball skills for the St. Vincent–St. Mary varsity team. He averaged an impressive 21 points and 6 rebounds per game, contributing significantly to the team's success. The Fighting Irish had a remarkable season, going 27–0 and securing the Division III state title, making them the only boys high school team in Ohio to finish the season undefeated.

Continuing his stellar performance as a sophomore, James further elevated his game. He averaged 25.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, 5.8 assists, and 3.8 steals per game. The team continued to excel, finishing the season 26–1 and repeating as state champions. Some home games during the season were played at the University of Akron's 5,492-seat Rhodes Arena to accommodate the high demand for tickets from alumni, fans, and scouts, both from college and the NBA, eager to witness James in action.

For his exceptional contributions, LeBron James received significant recognition. He was named Ohio Mr. Basketball and earned a spot on the USA Today All-USA First Team, becoming the first sophomore to achieve either of these honors.

Football

During his time as an underclassman, LeBron James showcased his versatility by playing wide receiver for St. Vincent–St. Mary's football team. 51  His talents on the gridiron attracted attention from Division I programs, with Notre Dame among the schools expressing interest.By the conclusion of his second year, James earned the distinction of being named first team all-state. In his junior year, he played a crucial role in leading the Fighting Irish to the state semifinals.

Regrettably, LeBron James did not participate in football during his senior year due to a wrist injury sustained in an AAU basketball game. The absence of his presence on the football field sparked speculation among sports analysts, football critics, coaches, and players, both former and current. Many have pondered the possibility that James could have pursued a career in the National Football League given his athletic prowess and skills on the football field.

Miami Heat (2010–2014)

LeBron James entered free agency at 12:01 am EDT on July 1, 2010, becoming an unrestricted free agent. During this period, multiple teams, including the Bulls, Los Angeles Clippers, Miami Heat, New York Knicks, New Jersey Nets, and Cavaliers, reached out to express their interest in signing him. On July 8, James made a significant announcement during a live ESPN special titled The Decision, revealing that he would be joining the Miami Heat. The broadcast originated from the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich, Connecticut, and not only generated $2.5 million for charity but also contributed an additional $3.5 million from advertising revenue, which was directed to various charitable causes.

Coincidentally, on the day before the special, fellow free agents Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade also declared their intention to sign with the Miami Heat. Subsequent reports suggested that as early as 2006, the trio had discussed the possibility of joining forces during the 2010 free agency period. LeBron James made the decision to team up with Bosh and Wade, believing that this collaboration would allow him to shoulder less of the offensive burden and increase his chances of winning an NBA championship compared to staying in Cleveland. Heat president Pat Riley played a pivotal role in persuading James to join forces with Bosh and Wade, emphasizing the potential benefits of the partnership. James envisioned that with the offensive load alleviated, he could pursue the unique accomplishment of averaging a triple-double in a season, aiming to become the first player since Oscar Robertson to achieve this feat.

Los Angeles Lakers (2018–present)

On June 29, 2018, LeBron James chose to opt out of his contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers, transitioning into unrestricted free agency. The following day, on July 1, his management company, Klutch Sports, officially announced that he would be signing with the Los Angeles Lakers. The deal was successfully finalized on July 9. Rich Paul, James's agent, shed light on the decision in an interview with Sports Illustrated, stating, In 2010, when he went to Miami, it was about championships. In 2014, when he went back to Cleveland, it was about delivering on a promise. In 2018 it was just about doing what he wants to do.
