Best Selling Video Games
Here is the Top 10 Best Selling Video games all of times.
10-Tetris (Nintendo)
Being one of the first games of a whole generation, Tetris changed the way we play games. The Nintendo version of the game was released on June 14, 1989, and has sold more than 43 million copies worldwide. It is important to note that this number does not include any of these old gray hand-held consoles that many of us had back in the days so Tetris actually reached a lot more people.
The satisfaction of setting up a few rows only to “eliminate” them with a single falling block is near-impossible to replicate. It’s even better if you strap on a modern VR set and play the trippy and surreal Tetris Effect.
9-Wii Fit
The Nintendo Wii featured a lot of games that are focused on getting you moving while you play. Wii Fit is one of the most popular of them selling more than 43.8 million after it launched on Dec. 1, 2007.
As you can guess by the name, the game’s focus is getting you in shape, while making exercising fun. It also utilizes the Wii Balance Board peripheral, which adds a new layer to the whole Wii experience. So if you were looking to do yoga, strength training, aerobics, and/or balance exercises in the form of a game, Wii Fit is the right fit for you and almost 44 million other people!
8-Mario Kart 8
This installment of the party racer was released on May 29, 2014, and sold 45.53 million copies. The unmatched fun gives the game ridiculously wide appeal, and the simplicity of the controls helps it along even more. Anyway, who doesn’t like tossing banana peels all over the track?
The game was released both for Wii U and Switch, which made it popular as Nintendo Switch swiftly became one of the most desired consoles as well. So whether you have the older Wii U or the newer Switch, you can hop inside one of the fancy karts and Blue Shell your friends.
7-Pokémon Red / Green / Blue / Yellow
The different versions of Pokémon were released between Feb. 27, 1996, and June 16, 2000, depending on the region. All of them combined sold more than 47.52 million copies to the aspiring Pokémon masters. The anime laid the groundwork for the game’s popularity, embedding it deep in the cultural zeitgeist for years to come.
Who doesn’t want to go into the wilderness and chase mystical animals to become the greatest trainer?
6-Super Mario Bros.
Whatever we say about the legendary Super Mario Bros. game will not do justice to how influential this franchise is. Released on Sept. 13, 1985, the game sold more than 58 million copies, which makes Mario and Luigi the most popular plumbers in the entire world.
Eating mushrooms and jumping around while trying to save the princess might not seem the greatest of plots for a game nowadays, but it was more than enough in 1985 for Super Mario Bros. to become one of the most groundbreaking titles ever. Everybody knew the shortcuts, jumping patterns, and places with hidden bonuses after spending hundreds and hundreds of hours in front of the TV screen.
5-PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
Dec. 20, 2017, marks the day when PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (also known as PUBG) launched on PC. The battle royale genre was a thing even before that, but PUBG was the reason it exploded in popularity. Seemingly bored of the saturated arena shooter genre, it felt like everyone had taken to this slower-paced, more methodical shooter where every match feels different from the last.
The game sold more than 70 million copies over multiple platforms and will remain forever in the hall of fame of gaming.
4-Wii Sports
Officially released on Nov. 19, 2006, the fourth best-selling game of all time reached over 82.9 million people worldwide. The five sports included in the bundle are tennis, baseball, bowling, golf, and boxing, all of them controlled by swinging around the motion controllers, mimicking your avatar’s on-screen movements.
Everyone loves launching a baseball and throwing wild hooks in your sitting room – it’s all fun and games until you punch your TV. For anyone looking to get a little fitter, Wii Sports offered a fun way to get your blood pumping.
3-Tetris (EA)
The Electronic Arts version of Tetris was released on Sept. 12, 2006, for mobile devices. It sold 100 million copies, thanks to its accessibility and familiarity. Also, it’s Tetris – one of the best video games of all time – on the go. It’s a hard proposition to turn down.
What better way to chip away at the time while waiting for an appointment?
2-Grand Theft Auto 5
GTA 5 is an open-world title developed by Rockstar Games, but you already knew that. It was released on Sept. 17, 2013, and since then has sold over 150 million on multiple platforms. The game features a single-player, story-driven campaign, but its boom in popularity came from somewhere else: GTA Online.
GTA Online allowed players to take on their own personality, complete intricate missions, and show off their ill-gotten gains to their friends and enemies. It’s endless sandbox fun. GTA 5 is nothing short of genre-defining.
1-Minecraft
There probably isn’t even a single child in the world that doesn’t like to play with one of these block-building toys such as Lego. Since Nov. 18, 2011, everybody could play with virtual blocks in Minecraft. While also being a challenging survival game, Minecraft offers boundless creativity, where the only barrier to creating something is, quite literally, the limits of your imagination. People have even made working phones that can call real phones in the real world. It is mind-boggling.
Minecraft sold more than 238 million copies since its original launch. While some of the games on this list got here through accessibility and wide appeal, Minecraft got here by offering depth and possibility. There are plenty of copies out there, but there’s nothing as good as the original. You know what those off-brand Lego blocks are like – rubbish!
