Billie Eilish (Part 1)
Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O'Connell, born on December 18, 2001, is an American singer and songwriter who gained widespread attention in 2015 with her debut single "Ocean Eyes," which was written and produced by her brother, Finneas O'Connell. The siblings often collaborate on music and live performances.
In 2017, Eilish released her debut EP titled Don't Smile at Me, which achieved commercial success, reaching the top 15 of various record charts globally, including the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.
Her first studio album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? (2019), debuted at number one on both the US Billboard 200 and the UK Albums Chart. The album's fifth single, "Bad Guy," became her first number-one single on the US Billboard Hot 100, making her the first artist born in the 21st century to achieve this feat.
In 2020, Eilish performed the theme song "No Time to Die" for the James Bond film of the same name, which topped the UK Singles Chart and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2022. She has released several successful singles since then, including "Everything I Wanted," "My Future," "Therefore I Am," and "Your Power."
Her second studio album, Happier Than Ever (2021), also achieved significant success, topping the charts in 25 countries. Eilish wrote and performed "What Was I Made For?" for the fantasy film Barbie (2023), which became her second number-one single in the UK and earned her a second Academy Award nomination.
Eilish has received numerous accolades throughout her career, including nine Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, three MTV Video Music Awards, three Brit Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, and an Academy Award. She holds multiple Guinness World Records and is known for being the youngest artist in Grammy history to win all four general field categories in the same year. Additionally, she was featured on Time magazine's Time 100 list in both 2019 and 2021.
Aside from her musical accomplishments, Eilish is known for her activism, particularly regarding climate change awareness, body positivity, women's reproductive rights, and gender equality. She has been recognized for her contributions to these causes and was honored as one of the BBC 100 Women in December 2022.
Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O'Connell, born on December 18, 2001, in Los Angeles, California, is the daughter of actress and teacher Maggie Baird and actor Patrick O'Connell, both of whom are also musicians and actively participate in Eilish's music career and tours. Eilish has Irish and Scottish ancestry and was conceived via in vitro fertilization.
Raised in the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, Eilish and her brother Finneas were homeschooled by their mother, who taught them the basics of songwriting. Encouraged by their parents to explore their interests, Eilish and Finneas engaged in various artistic pursuits, including music, art, and acting. Eilish's first exposure to music came from her family, particularly her brother and mother, who inspired her to pursue a career in music.
Eilish began performing at talent shows and joined the Los Angeles Children's Chorus at the age of eight. She started playing the ukulele at six and wrote her first "real" song at age 11 for her mother's songwriting class, drawing inspiration from the television series The Walking Dead for its theme about the zombie apocalypse.
Aside from music, Eilish also dabbled in acting, appearing in background roles for films such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Ramona and Beezus, and the X-Men series. She also took dance classes until 2016 when a growth plate injury ended her dance career, leading her to focus more on recording music. Throughout her upbringing, Eilish's family played a significant role in nurturing her creativity and supporting her artistic endeavors.
In 2015, when she was just 13 years old, Billie Eilish started collaborating with her brother Finneas on music. Finneas, who had been writing and producing music for some time and had his own band, worked with Eilish on their first recorded songs together, "She's Broken" and "Fingers Crossed". While "She's Broken" was written by Finneas, "Fingers Crossed" was penned by Eilish. The duo uploaded these songs to SoundCloud for fun.
On November 18, 2015, Eilish released the song "Ocean Eyes", which proved to be a turning point in her career. The track, originally intended for Finneas's band the Slightlys, was written, mixed, and produced by Finneas. He decided it would suit Eilish's vocals better and gave it to her when her dance teacher requested a song for choreography. The siblings uploaded "Ocean Eyes" to SoundCloud, where it gained hundreds of thousands of listens within a short period. This caught the attention of Finneas's manager, Danny Rukasin, who recognized Eilish's potential and reached out to discuss her future.
In January 2016, Eilish signed with the A&R company Platoon, with the help of Finneas and his manager. This deal led to her connection with Apple Music and the development of her image with the assistance of a publicist and stylist. A music video for "Ocean Eyes", directed by Megan Thompson, premiered on Eilish's YouTube channel on March 24, 2016, further boosting her visibility.
Continuing their momentum, Eilish and Finneas released "Six Feet Under" on SoundCloud as her second single on June 23, 2016. They followed this up with a homemade music video for the song on June 30, 2016, directed by Eilish and edited by her mother, Maggie Baird.
In August 2016, Justin Lubliner signed Eilish to Darkroom and Interscope Records after recognizing her talent. He devised a rollout strategy for her, drawing inspiration from hip-hop artists like Travis Scott and Chance the Rapper, focusing on creating a distinctive persona and aesthetic rather than relying solely on hit singles. "Six Feet Under" and "Ocean Eyes" were re-released as singles for digital download and streaming in November 2016, marking another step in Eilish's burgeoning career.
In January 2017, Billie Eilish continued to build on the success of "Ocean Eyes" and "Six Feet Under" by releasing remix EPs for both tracks. The "Ocean Eyes" EP featured remixes by Astronomyy, Blackbear, Goldhouse, and Cautious Clay, while the "Six Feet Under" EP included remixes by Blu J, Gazzo, Jerry Folk, and Aire Atlantica.
Following the positive reception of the "Ocean Eyes" remixes, Eilish released "Bellyache" on February 24, 2017. A music video for the song, directed by Miles and AJ, was released on March 22, 2017. Additionally, Eilish contributed the track "Bored" to the soundtrack of the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, which was released on March 30, 2017. A music video for "Bored" followed on June 26, 2017.
Continuing her prolific output, Eilish released the single "Watch" on June 30, 2017, followed by "Copycat" on July 14, 2017. These singles preceded the release of her debut EP, titled Don't Smile at Me, which arrived on August 11, 2017. Despite being her debut, the EP achieved notable success, reaching number 14 on the US Billboard 200 chart.
In support of Don't Smile at Me, Eilish embarked on the Don't Smile at Me Tour in October 2017. During this time, she also released "Bitches Broken Hearts" on November 10, 2017, via SoundCloud. Eilish's team worked closely with Spotify, securing her placement on the popular playlist "Today's Top Hits," which contributed to her growing commercial success.
Described by some as fitting into the "streambait" genre, characterized by mid-tempo, melancholic pop influenced by artists like Lana Del Rey, Eilish's music found a wide audience on streaming platforms. In September 2017, Apple Music named Eilish their Up Next artist, leading to further promotion and exposure for her music. Additionally, she collaborated with American rapper Vince Staples on the remix "&Burn," released on December 15, 2017, as part of the expanded edition of Don't Smile at Me.
