Turkish Author, Poet, Journalist - Sabahattin Ali

Sabahattin Ali was a Turkish author, poet, and journalist. He is best known for his novel The Devil Within Us and the novella Madonna in a Fur Coat.

The short novel "Madonna in A Fur Coat" (1943) is widely regarded as one of the finest novellas in Turkish literature. Recently, its translations have achieved bestseller status, setting record-breaking sales figures in the author's home country. Initially serialized in the daily Hakikat from 1941 to 1942 in 48 installments, the novel gained immense popularity.

Sabahattin Ali, with this work, joined the ranks of the two Turkish novelists, alongside Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar's "The Time Regulation Institute", whose works were chosen for publication as Penguin Classics. The novel, translated by Maureen Freely and Alexander Dawe, features a scholarly introduction by David Selim Sayers.

• Madonna in a Fur Coat: This novella is considered one of Sabahattin Ali's masterpieces. It tells the story of a young Turkish man named Raif Efendi and his love for a mysterious woman named Maria Puder.

• The Voice: Another one of Ali's novels, "Ses," deals with themes of identity, love, and social issues. The protagonist, İlhami, is torn between tradition and modernity.

• The Mill: This novel revolves around the life of a miller and his family, exploring themes of poverty, oppression, and social injustice.

These are some of Sabahattin Ali's most well-known works. His writing often addresses social and political issues, and his works continue to be widely read and appreciated in Turkish literature.
