π»πππππ π»π πΉπππππππ π»ππ 90π - The Weirdest Of The Nineties
Maybe itΒ΄s been months...
Or closer to a year...
Anyway, Long Ago I started joining this #NinetiesFriday Fiesta.
I did not miss a single week, which means I posted about 50 nineties posts talking about all facets...
From puppy love, till data-driven global changes.
All posts filled with nineties music, nineties vids, nineties rants.
But right now I feel like I am running on empty...run Forrest run.
These Nineties posts take a lot of time even though everything happened a long, long time ago.
I have been digging and dishing up topics, sometimes they invite themselves, but I am done hunting them. Hence this might be my latest and last regular #NinetiesFriday post so....
Let's make it a weird one.
The weirdest Nineties Moments
1οΈβ£ The Day Barney Got Beaten Up (1997)
- During a Thanksgiving Day parade, the Barney the Dinosaur balloon deflated and police had to violently stab it to prevent it from flying off. Kids everywhere were horrified.
But how could they prove the lady had brain damage from that thing on her head, to go watch those balloons in that weather requires some serious brain damage to start with....
2οΈβ£ Pepsiβs Fighter Jet Lawsuit (1996)
- Pepsi ran a commercial jokingly offering a Harrier fighter jet for 7 million Pepsi Points. A guy actually collected enough points, demanded the jet, and sued Pepsi when they refused.
I really had to Google this back in the day I first heard about it...and as I Googled it was way past those nineties, but it remains a cool true story-
Oh now I remember when I heard about it:
3οΈβ£ Bill Clintonβs βI Did Not Have Sexual Relationsβ Speech (1998)
- The U.S. President publicly denied an affair with Monica Lewinsky, only for DNA evidence (aka a certain blue dress) to prove otherwise.
This is one of my favorite moments including the cigar and the stain.... did or did he not have sex with that woman, Miss Lewinsky?
4οΈβ£ Mr. Blobbyβs Terrifying Popularity (1993-1998)
- A giant, pink, polka-dotted nightmare clown became a TV sensation, despite being creepy, annoying, and absolutely nonsensical.
If you thought Barney was scary....the Brits did it better...as well always?
5οΈβ£ The Millennium Bug Panic (1999)
- The world panicked that computers would crash at midnight on New Yearβs Eve, causing nuclear disasters, financial collapse, and total chaos.
Y2K ended up being the biggest Nothing Burger of the century.
6οΈβ£ PokΓ©monβs Seizure-Inducing Episode (1997)
- An episode of PokΓ©mon caused seizures in nearly 700 children, leading to ambulances lined up outside hospitals across Japan.
I guess I am not Japanese.
I watched it back then, and I watched it just now....
It must be the brainrot but I feel fine even after watching it 9 times???
7οΈβ£ The Tamagotchi Death Crisis (1996-1999)
- Kids were skipping school, crying, and even holding funerals when their digital pets died. Some schools banned Tamagotchis because students were too emotionally attached.
And the British kids....they went Wow.... I got the rare Death no tears, no nothing, again those Japanese kids....
8οΈβ£ The Russian Space Station Collision (1997)
- Russiaβs Mir space station was accidentally crashed into by a cargo ship, knocking out power and air supply while cosmonauts barely survived.
I say....can we blame this on Vodka?
9οΈβ£ The Eiffel Tower Stunt (1998)
- A man parachuted off the Eiffel Tower, trying to break a record. His parachute failed, and he tragically fell to his death in front of a crowd.
I did not get the actual footage but this comes close:
Talking about flying....
π The βFlying Snakeβ Panic (1996)
- Rural villages in South Africa reported seeing a flying snake with wings, sparking mass panic. Some refused to leave their homes for days.
I say they just found a good excuse not to go to work.
Or was it:
Oh no it had wings right...so this one?
Okay those were some of my favorite weird Nineties moments but this show would not be as great as it is if I did not dig up at least 10 weird Nineties Tunes as well....
πΆ Bizarre & Forgotten 90s Songs
Now I've played so many already, this kinda was a hard one...
Oh maybe I should not have said that right before this tune.
How cute Daddy and his little ehh princess
1οΈβ£ ""Lemon Incest" β Serge & Charlotte Gainsbourg (1991)
- French singer Serge Gainsbourg duets with his daughter about "incestuous love" (though he claimed it was symbolic).
- Even for the Frogies, this was slightly uncomfortable.
"the love that we will never make together is the most beautiful, the most violent, the purest, the most intoxicating,"
That line paired with a music video showing Serge, shirtless, lying on a bed with Charlotte in a nightshirt and underwear.
Was it a genuine exploration of taboo or a deliberate attempt to provoke?
2οΈβ£ "Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Hand" β Primitive Radio Gods (1996)
- A spoken-word-style alternative hit, with bluesy samples and eerie beats.
- Did I add this one in the past, I shouΓ±d have as it sounds like something from a Lynch film.
3οΈβ£ "Spaceman" β Babylon Zoo (1996)
- A futuristic, robotic-sounding techno-rock song that starts like an alien transmission.
- Massive in the UK, but most people only remember the first 30 seconds, which is not due to the song ofcource but the massive amounts of E taking effect after 30 seconds.
BTW I loved that song...even without E.
4οΈβ£ "Swamp Thing" β The Grid (1994)
- Techno meets banjo. Yes, banjo rave music.
- Somehow, this weird dance track became a UK club hit.
Did not get it back then and still do not but I think it was just a smart Cotton Eye Joe Follow Up, maybe???
5οΈβ£ "Da Funk" β Daft Punk (1995)
- A funky instrumental electronic song with no lyrics, just a repeating distorted bassline. Now that was not so impressive, but I just liked the video: a dog-headed man limping around New York and well not really getting away with it.
6οΈβ£ "Possum Kingdom" β Toadies (1994)
- A song about a vampire or serial killer luring someone into the woods.
- Creepy as hell, yet somehow a radio hit.
And as you know by now I love it creepy...if you do to check out my CreepyPasta post before listening to this tune.
ππππππππ₯ πΎπππ€ - E23 - Creepy Pasta Time
7οΈβ£ "Jesus Built My Hotrod" β Ministry feat. Gibby Haynes (1991)
The first time I heard this Industrial metal meets incomprehensible, drunken ranting, I just got blown away.
I donΒ΄t get the song but I guess that is part of the magic.
8οΈβ£ "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" β Crash Test Dummies (1993)
I did the paradoy last week, but this song, how did this monotone trancedental tune become a Top 10 hit?
9οΈβ£ "MC 900ft Jesus - If I Only Had A Brain (1997)
- Beavis & Butthead mad this song famous.... no one would remember this song if it was not for this:
π "Rock nβ Roll McDonaldβs" β Wesley Willis (1996)
- A random guy with a keyboard singing about McDonaldβs starting off positive and then turning it into the anthem of the Nineties if you ask me.
Absurd. Strange. Legendary. Just a Great Way To Die, or end today's show.
#NinetiesFriday was brought to you by My Nineties Rant
I so Agree...Googled It Bruhhhh
WTF do I do on #NinetiesFriday?
Well, don't do what I do because that would be copy/pasta!
But some ideas are music, movies, television, sports, or really anything Nineties related.
I assume movie, TV, or music topic reviews or talk will be most common, but you could also talk about a sports memory or something else.
Make sure to use: #NinetiesFriday and post or cross-post in the Nineties Friday Community
Thank Goodness you made it till the end Pees, Love and I am out of here!
