During the attack, Mr Abe was delivering an election campaign speech ahead of Sunday's election for the parliament's upper house. The male assailant (in his 40s) has been arrested.
He had been the longest serving Prime Minister of Japan. He was popular due to his right wing political policies and stance. His cabinet has been in a political antagonistic stance with China during his time as Prime Minister of Japan, and at times struggled with South Korea as well despite both as the allies of United States of America.
He has visited a controversial war memorial named Yasukuni Shrine. In the past, visits by Japanese prime ministers to the shrine have always led to official condemnation by neighbouring countries since 1985, especially China whom would always jump on the issue, as they see it as an attempt to legitimize Japan's past militarism and war of aggression in World War 2.
