The giant Ubisoft officially entered the web3 space with the game Champions Tactics after many years of exploration and discovery.

Ubisoft, a famous gaming brand from France, announced the launch of the first video game incorporating blockchain technology called "Champions Tactics".

The game will be available on PC from October 23, and is deployed on layer-2 Home Verse, part of the Oasys blockchain gaming ecosystem. Sega and Ubisoft are two of the validators of this network.

This is a web3 tactical role-playing game (RPG), in which players collect and assemble character formations in the style of Dungeon & Dragons to fight others.

Ubisoft said that the focus of Champions Tactics is a collection of 75,000 champions, which are digital items (NFTs) that players can own and trade in the game. Ubisoft will also feature a "Forge" system, allowing players to customize champions to create new champions.

The gaming giant added that the Champion mint for Champions Tactics in July "sold out" in minutes, generating more than $8 million in transaction volume, according to data from OpenSea. The Warlords Mint in late 2023 was also one of the most successful NFT releases, selling out in seconds and topping the OpenSea charts for weeks with more than 12,000 transactions.

Nicolas Pouard, Vice President of Ubisoft Lab, shared:

"With Champions Tactics, we want web3 technology to be integrated naturally, so that users can fully enjoy the fun and strategy of the game."

Today's move marks Ubisoft's new step into the blockchain field after much skepticism since its first exploration in 2018. Over the past year, Ubisoft has also made many more open moves towards the crypto industry, including collaborating with Reddit to release Avatar NFT Rabbids; joining hands with Immutable to build blockchain games; supporting White Star's $120 million web3 investment fund...

The launch of Ubisoft's web3 game comes in the context of the market witnessing a major shift in blockchain game publishing. Simple games like "Hamster Kombat" and "Notcoin" on Telegram have attracted millions of users thanks to the opportunity to earn token rewards.

Meanwhile, AAA projects that aim to offer tradable in-game assets are starting to hit the shelves. This week, Gunzilla Games launched an early access version of its Fortnite-style battle royale game on PlayStation and PC called “Off the Grid.” The game could become the first console game to allow players to own and trade NFTs.
