The misconception about Artificial Intelligence

Funny thing about current AI achievement

We are in the world of advanced computing with Nano-size chip manufacturing. Many people are very excited about moving into the age of AI and fantasizing how we can live with robots that behave exactly like humans. Well, if people think that way, they may be somewhat too optimistic, the truth is that they might be disappointed to hear that we will not be there in our life time, because according to Japanese Physicist Michio Kaku the world’s most intelligent robot is Honda’s Asimo (see below picture) this smartest robot in the world only has the Intelligence of a cockroach! Yes that’s something to laugh about!

We are still a long way to build truely intelligent robots. Scientists said this because I guessed Asimo can only respond to light and sound sources as a cockroach would do to function as a living thing.

The misconception of many people is that we are in the era of AI. The truth is that we are far from it. In the current world of high technology, we are almost saturated with Moore's law in silicon chip size reduction and computation power improvement, yet we are only able to make the world's smartest AI-Asimo with the level of intelligence of a cockroach.

This is sound pretty pathetic in our AI development and progress. We are still a long way to make an AI as intelligent as a dog or a monkey, even at a dog’s level of intelligence it is not enough, because a dog behaves in a confused manner, as it thinks humans are their same kind as a master dog, that’s why they are obedient and submissive, and lack one measure of intelligent life that is self-awareness. Only a monkey has self-awareness and knows they are different to humans, and has the desire to dominate situations. That's when some scientists think it gets dangerous because a monkey can be murderous.

Can AI become dangerous to humans?

The Hollywood movie Terminator thrilled us with AI capabilities, we may be scared of AI one day due to its potential self-learning mechanism without human compassion. Scientists think when an AI has self-awareness that can become dangerous!

According to Michio Kaku we are still 100 years from making an AI with the intelligence of a monkey or better. Making an AI to think like humans has mountains of technological barriers to climb, the difficulty lies on replicating the complexity of the human brain, replicating the ability to think and act with practical experiences plus analytical and creative intelligence. Replicating responses to emotions in AI are the most complex of the all, emotions of joy, anger, sorrow, love, hatred and desire. We still don't fully understan how does the brain work needless to say to achieve replication of its functions.

When AI can think and act like humans that’s when they have the free will to be good or evil. But, for those who are in fear of the dangerous AI takeover humans in future, they can be relaxed now as we will not live to see a very intelligent AI that have self-awareness and become murderous.
