A Day For Celebration

đCinco De Mayo! đ
Cinco de Mayo is celebrated every year on May 5th.
The celebration originated from the victory in 1862 over France in the Battle of Puebla. On that day Mexican President Benito JuĂĄrez left General Ignacio SeguĂn Zaragoza, a Texas native, to defend the city of Puebla from French invasion.
A long and bloody battle that began in 1861 when JuĂĄrez suspended the nationâs foreign debt payments, and Napoleon III responded by sending 5,000 elite French troops to invade Mexico, attempting to make it part of a French colony.
fighting on the Mexican side at the battle of Puebla, were 500 Mexican-Americans. The victory was an unexpected one because European forces were far more powerful at the time. This incredible victory for Mexico is what inspired the national pride and became an important symbol of national patriotism.
