Canine mange is a topic that raises concern for all dog lovers. What exactly is scabies? How does it affect our faithful four-legged companions? And what can we do to protect them? But what is Canine Mange?
Canine scabies, also known as scabies, is a skin disease caused by microscopic mites. These mites, known as Sarcoptes scabiei canis, burrow under the dog's skin and cause intense irritation and severe itching. Although it can affect dogs of all ages and breeds, it is most common in those with weakened immune systems or unhealthy living conditions.
Symptoms of canine mange can vary, but generally include:
- Intense itching: One of the most obvious signs of canine mange is intense itching. Affected dogs may scratch excessively, bite themselves, and rub against objects to relieve discomfort.
- Hair loss: Skin affected by scabies often has areas of hair loss, redness, and peeling.
- Scabs and skin lesions: Over time, the affected skin can develop scabs, open wounds, and secondary infections due to constant scratching.
- Changes in behavior: Experiencing constant discomfort, dogs with mange may become irritable, depressed, or anxious.
Diagnosis of canine mange is usually made through a physical examination and additional tests, such as skin scrapings to identify mites. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, treatment may include medicated baths, topical medications, and in severe cases, oral medications to control the mite infestation and relieve symptoms.

- Maintaining hygiene: Bathe your dog regularly with products suitable for its skin and coat.
- Regular Vet Visits: Schedule regular checkups with your veterinarian to detect any health problems in their early stages.
- Parasite control: Use flea and tick products recommended by your veterinarian to prevent infestations of mites and other external parasites.
- Clean environment: Keep the area where your dog lives clean, including his bed, toys and play areas.
