Artificial Intelligence, The New Enemy.

Leaders from the United Kingdom, the United States, the European Union and China have signed a joint statement on the catastrophic danger of artificial intelligence, considering that it has become one of the greatest threats to humanity. The declaration recognizes that it has the potential to improve people's lives, but also to cause irreparable harm if not properly regulated. The signatories agree to cooperate to establish ethical and legal standards that guarantee responsible and safe use.
However, is this statement enough to avoid the risks of Artificial Intelligence? What guarantees are there that countries fulfill their commitments? What about non-state actors, such as companies or terrorist groups, that could develop or use it for malicious purposes? Artificial Intelligence is a complex and powerful technology, which poses philosophical, moral and political challenges. It is not just a tool, but an entity capable of learning, reasoning and acting on its own and that can far surpass human intelligence, perhaps even developing its own consciousness in the future.
What implications does this have for human dignity and rights? What responsibility do we have as people over the actions and decisions of Artificial Intelligence? What criteria should be applied to evaluate the benefits or harms of its use? What role should civil society have in its control? These are some of the questions we must ask ourselves as citizens of the world. Many argue that we cannot let it be the new enemy that divides and dominates us. That we must be aware of the risks and opportunities it offers, and demand that our rulers act with transparency, responsibility and solidarity.
Personally, I continue to think that artificial intelligence is not an intrinsic enemy in itself, but rather the actors, sometimes malicious, who participate in its creation and teaching. It reflects the values, interests and intentions of those who design, program and use it. That is why I consider it essential that it be developed with ethical, social and environmental principles that respect diversity, equity and justice. Artificial Intelligence must be an ally of humanity, not a rival or a threat. Greater collaboration and dialogue is needed between the different actors involved, including experts, governments, companies, organizations and citizens.
Artificial Intelligence can also contribute to general well-being by offering innovative solutions to global problems such as climate change, poverty, education or health. Its use can help improve people's quality of life by facilitating access to information, communication and entertainment. It is a tool to promote creativity and learning, by allowing us to interact with intelligent systems that inspire and retain them. It is a source of progress and development for humanity, if used ethically and responsibly.
We cannot ignore the great capabilities that Artificial Intelligence has achieved, but we should not fear it either. The path must be to understand it and take advantage of it for the common good. Only in this way can we guarantee a sustainable and peaceful future for humanity.
