What exactly is Tea Protocol?
At tea, it was noted that open-source software maintainers and contributors frequently lack adequate reward for their contributions to creating and sustaining open-source software. This absence of incentives has resulted in poorly maintained, vulnerable, or low-quality software. With this concern in mind, the objective is to formulate a protocol that improves the sustainability and integrity of the software supply chain by enabling open-source developers to capture the value they generate.
The Internet relies heavily on open-source projects, which are developed by global communities of developers and offer freely accessible codebases. Over the past 80 years, open-source software has evolved from a niche interest to the cornerstone of innovation. However, the developers behind these projects do not receive tangible rewards for their substantial contributions.
For instance, Max Howell created Homebrew ("Brew") in 2009, which quickly became one of the most rapidly growing and widely used open-source projects in history. Homebrew attained a level of scale and reach comparable to other renowned open-source projects like Java, Python, and Linux. Despite Homebrew's success and widespread adoption, Max could only afford to maintain the project as a "hobby" while working as a developer at Apple to support himself financially. Max's experience is emblematic of the challenges faced by many open-source developers.
Enterprise software, an industry worth billions of dollars, is built upon this foundation of open-source software. However, the developers who maintain this crucial infrastructure often receive little compensation in return. Despite the immense wealth generated by enterprise software, open-source projects remain essentially public utilities, lacking effective mechanisms for developers to capture the value they contribute.
Tea's decentralized protocol is designed to enhance the sustainability and integrity of open-source software. It enables developers to reap the rewards of their efforts in a trustless manner, facilitated by an impact metric, reputation system, and incentives. The core belief driving this initiative is that meaningful rewards for open-source contributions require an independent and autonomous mechanism for recognizing impact, as well as a platform for community members to share their discoveries and constructive opinions on projects or developers' work.
