For a long time the competitive esports scene primarily consisted of one of the most famous MOBA games to date, League of legends. For a most of 2010-2020, League of legends esports was probably the most prominent game competitively across the globe. However, since the release of riots 'Valorant' a newer strategic first person shooter game league of legends popularity has dropped significantly. With league of legends not really having anything knew to offer, and the skill range between a new player and the average player, the retention rate is slowly dropping off as the years pass.

Popular esports game genres

  • FPS (First person shooters)
  • MOBAs (Multiplayer online battle arena)
  • Turn based card games
  • RTS (Real time strategy games)
  • VSRGs (Vertically scrolling rhythm games)

Whilst games such as RPGs are very popular among video game players, their lack of a player vs player aspect in the sense of individual or small scale playability. In the past, card games and RTS games used to be very popular in the competitive esports scene but have lost their light as the more popular MOBAs and FPS games have become more and more trending.

Hopefully in the near future there are a few more genres that come back into the scene or appear in the scene, as many of these games are fun to watch people play on streaming platforms like twitch.tv however offer very little to show in the competitive scene with actual prize pools.
